Diagnosing Epilepsy using EEG
Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryEpilepsy may stem from changes in the brain’s development, wiring, or chemicals. Doctors don’t know exactly what causes it, but it can start after an illness or damage to the brain.
About 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. There are around 180,000 new cases of epilepsy each year.
Doctors can have a difficult time diagnosing epilepsy. Your doctor may recommend certain expensive tests.
The purpose of this project is to determine epilepsy of a patient using an EEG headset. An electroencephalogram (EEG) can help your doctor diagnose a seizure. The sensors in the headset, will record the brainwaves and determine the changes happening in the brain. The data collected from the headset, will help the doctors examine the seizures. This process can replace the time taking procedure of taking all the tests manually. For the patient, the cost and time will be reduced.
Project ObjectivesThis project would provide a hardware to diagnose epilepsy using EEG. Patients and Doctors will be able to examine the brain activity of patients every moment. Also they will be able to determine which event triggered the seizure – and would be able prevent that event in future. To sum it up, patients wouldn’t have to take extra expensive tests on just a doubt. They will be able to confirm first that either they have epilepsy and all those expensive tests worth the handsome amount of money for a middle-class person.
Project Implementation MethodDiscussing about the methodology, first EEG Sensors will collect the gamma signals. After that those signals will be filtered out or processed to cancel the noise from them. The processed the signals will be evaluated either they are normal or abnormal. The results will be stored on cloud – where complete user profile will be maintained. The doctors will be able to access those profiles when needed, to examine the patient’s conditions at different times.
Benefits of the ProjectThe benefits include a cost efficient and time saving technique to diagnose epilepsy at an early stage. Mostly, people with epilepsy avoid going to the doctor because of money. Without proper care and any prescribed medication, their condtition gets worse. Our project can save their money. Another benefit is that it will also inform which part of the brain is affected, in that case, surgical operations can cure the disease.
