Development of Pyrolytic plastic waste Conversion to Biofuel.
Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject SummaryThis project is intended to get essential learning of convenient plastic waste management and their better reuse of plastic waste for sustainable energy growth and prosperity of the public health and safety. This project aims at understanding the fundamentals of waste plastic to fuel conversion process, major components required, parametric analysis, implementation method and self-sustained operation to extract the quality fuel oil. This project is time bound and outcomes can be assessed after successful completion. Plastic to fuel oil conversion plants can be integrated with solid waste management industry to be commercialize. As an outcome, it will provide indigenous crude oil, surely save large land utilization for dumping purpose and will reduce the health hazards and arrest the climate change.
Project ObjectivesThe prime objectives of this project are to
- Understand plastic waste to fuel conversion process
- Parametric analysis to get optimum design of reactor for efficient fuel oil conversion
- Achieve self-sustained and reliable operation
- Provide an alternative energy source as petroleum products.
- Contribute in reduction of health hazards and environmental disturbances due to plastic waste.
Mini Pyro lytic plastic waste to Fuel oil conversion plant is to be developed. On the way to implementation, Optimum design parameters are to be analyzed for successful fuel oil conversion following the condensation in a condenser. Plastic waste is to be collected and prepared for feeding in the reactor. Optimum parameters are to be found for efficient fuel conversion and incorporated in the development.
Benefits of the Project-
- Through pyrolysis, we can extract fuel oil from plastic waste and this kind of fuel oil can be used as industrial heating purpose.
- The fuel oil from plastic waste is a kind of heavy oil which has heating value even higher than some diesel, so you can well take the advantage of its high heating value, and use it for boilers, cement factory, steel mill and glass factory, etc. as the diesel, coal as well as wood substitute.
- By using discarded plastics to create fuel, plants can bring about reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. Plastic fuel oil use minimizes the quantity of fossil fuel used to generate energy. Typically, plastic to fuel conversion plants also reuse the gases produced during pyrolysis.
- It will provide an alternative energy source as petroleum products.
- It will contribute in reduction of health hazards and environmental disturbances due to plastic waste.
- It will provide better solid waste management solution.
In order to develop knowledge and offer a simple testing platform, the first waste plastic is focus on building a laboratory scale also called bench scale processing unit. The processing unit will work in batch mode which means that the plastic feedstock is put up all at once before the process starts. No additional material will put in the system during operation.
The main parameters monitored are temperature within the reactor, the condenser and the gas flow within the safety bubbler. The temperature within the reactor is crucial for good results and is controlled with a controller with a probe installed in the top part of the reactor.
The reactor size will be 12 to 15 liter and will be made with strainless steel the operating pressure of reator will be 1atm and the design pressure will be some where around 3atm. The wall thickness of the reactor will be 3mm.It will convert around 60-80% plastic in to fuel and remaining it wil convert into other byproducts. There will be a pressure relief valve on the reactor which will open if the pressure will rised to the desired pressure.
