Project Summary

In disasters the death toll increases due to the failure of existing communication systems which causes delay in provision of the first aid to the affected people. To overcome this situation several communication means can be utilized. Among all, the GEO-stationary satellite communication is the most effective one due to its availability for 24 hours. In order to connect to the mentioned Satellite, the power of the uplink signal has to be amplified before transmitting. This invokes a demand of a high power amplifier to be incorporated in the two way communication system. The power amplifier is the most important, energy hungry and non-linear device of any communication system. This project focuses on the development of highly stable and linear Power Amplifier suitable for ground station of Geostationary Satellite. A high gain circularly polarized antenna is already designed and tested. ADALM PLUTO /RF HACK (SDRs) will be used for the transmission. 

Project Objectives

The project objectives and target goals are the following

  1. To communicate through satellite at far-flung areas where other means of communication is not possible.
  2. Designing low loss high power amplifier to reduce system loss.
  3. To integrate the designed PA and circularly polarized antenna for uplink communication. 
  4. To establish a two-way communication link with the Geo-Stationary Satellite.

Project Implementation Method

The implementation of the project involves  the following steps to achieve our objectives

  1. To Study the basics  of power amplifier
  2. To learn the simulation tool i.e. Advanced Design System (ADS
  3. Literature review of already designed power amplifiers
  4. To simulate power amplifier using ADS in following steps:
  • DC Biasing
  • Stability
  • Load pull analysis
  • Impedance matching
  • Optimization and fine-tuning

     5.   Fabrication of the PA

     6.   Measurements of the PA

     7. To integrate the PA with already designed and tested Helical Antenna for uplink setup

     8. To establish the two-way communication link with the Satellite. 

Benefits of the Project

The prime benefit of the project is focused on the availability of a communication link in disasters situations. The proposed system can be effectively utilized in the disasters like flood, earthquake and other calamities in which the existing communication systems fails. As discussed earlier, the demographics of disasters in Pakistan as shown in figure below, depicts a high percentage of floods in comparison to other disasters. Since in flood all the existing communication links are disconnected and this invokes a great demand of a standalone system that can provide the communication. This project serves the purpose of filling this gap and enabling the disaster management to avoid delays in providing the first Aid to the affected people. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A complete ground station with the following items and components

1. 80 cm offset parabolic dish fed by a high gain helical antenna

2. Power Amplifier designed at 2.4 GHz with atleast 5 Watts power

3. Transceiver SDR like HACK-RF or ADALM PLUTO from Analog devices
