Development of Assistive Robotics for Disabled People
Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary- PROJECT SUMMARY
1a.Wheel chair to bed conversion mechanism
Assistive robotics for disabled and elderly consists of an an electric smart wheelchair and for disabled and elderly. The company is a combination of cutting edge research and affordable robotics for the disabled and elderly people .It is being founded to be built on an extensive array of robotic research and development for a better lifestyle. These products will improve life of millions of people worldwide especially in Pakistan.
1b. Executive Summary
More than one billion people have some form of disability which obstructs their day to day task, Robotic assistive devices are used increasingly to improve the independence and quality of life of persons with disabilities, Our project on assistive robotics consists of development of smart robotic wheel chair with bed to chair conversion mechanism Smart wheel chair to bed convertor is a way of easy movement and translation across multi variable urban terrain. The wheel chair moves with the touch of hand while connected to a smart phone for vital monitoring and secondary control. Thus equipping its user maneuverability in healthy and smart way without assistance from another human. The project is conjoined to help people of all ages with some sort of disability. This project promise easiness in day to day tasks for disabled people.
Project Objectives- PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Objective 1: Provide and maintain cost effective accessible technology for the Pakistani healthcare sector:
The specific individual goals within the above mentioned area include:
- The provision of a cohesive, sustainable community based information network for the benefit of low income, housebound physically mobility disabled;
- Continuing to meet the special needs of individuals with paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, stroke, emphysema, muscular dystrophy, spinal and arthritic degeneration, polio, obesity, Parkinson’s, motor neuron disease and any other disabilities.
Objective 2: To be a profitable business while improving lifestyle of people
- To make name as a brand of quality and customer care
- To develop a sustainable startup business
- To compete with global products with less price and better quality
Design process: This process consists of designing the assistive robotics products while considering the available resources. This also includes selecting a base material readily available in local market of Pakistan .Initially prototype was built from scratch. The design of smart wheel chair to bed converter was intiated after giving due thought to design considerations and a design outline was formulated and the prototype was designed, the design was tested in different software’s to assure its validity as a reliable product.
Key features of prototypes: The wheel chair to bed convertor was designed with a chain screw mechanism for converting the chair part in to the bed and vice versa. For making this prototype smart ,a health care monitoring system will be added, this will give an added feature to the wheelchair and will also enable mobile health monitoring of patients in hospice care, the wheelchair will be fully automated and will be controlled by a joystick and will be battery operated these technical details in depth are mentioned in the latter part .
Manufacturing and Automation: This process consists of framework building of the wheelchair. The wheel chair is a steel structure. First part of implementation method was design and software testing, the second part will consist of automation of the manufactured structure through a microcontroller and H-bridge circuitry .
Benefits of the ProjectThe Wheelchair To Bed Convertor:-There are over 10 million wheel chair users worldwide with only 3.3 million in the united state alone. 1.835 million Users are over the age of 65.17.4% of wheel chair users have jobs, 11.2 % specially abled have graduated college in wheelchair. This makes the smart wheel chair market a $3.9 billion market worldwide. Thus this increasing market requires smart, less costly and easy accessible solutions, which our product the smart wheelchair to bed convertor promises .It has the added benefit of changing in to a bed thus improving health care sector specifically in Pakistan where no of beds are less as compared to number of patients. If we consider the Islamabad region, PIMS hospital is 1168 bed hospital and daily patients are 1200 which often leads to bed shortage for patients. A smart solution is the smart wheel chair to bed which performs both tasks providing ease to patients and improving health care.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable- Smart wheelchair to bed converter :
- The wheel chair is electronically controlled
- It has a mobile health monitoring system
- It will convert in to bed by a push of a button
- The battery will be 6000mAh li-ion of ion brand
- The battery runs 48 hours on a single charge
- The charge time is 3 hours
