Project Title

Development of a Web Portal and Landslide hazard assessment Map for Karakorum Highway

Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject Summary

Gilgit Baltistan is one of the highly exposed area in Pakistan to Landslide events. The large variability of demostic geological factors combining with the difficulties in forcasting precipitation and in qualifying the level of earth quake related events,  demand for coordinated procedure techniques to calculate and forecast the hazard and the harmful impect of slop failures. By using new techniques in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and projecting the use of open-source tools, We plane to identifiy areas on Karakoram Highway (KKH) where the potential for Landslide activation exists.

In this reserch work we intend to prepare a detail Web portal and Landslide hazard assesment Map for Karakoram Highway (KKH)  and make it representable to intrested person through a web portal. Landslide map will be prepared using different resources maps, slope, Aspect, Geology, Land cover, proximity to roads, proximity to faults, proximity to streams. The overall objective  of this work is is to develop a map that will contribute in future to specializad skeptical and hazard analysis of each landslide on KKH.

Project Objectives

1. The proposed Web portal and Landslide hazard assesment map must be able to assist decision makers in land management activities and CPEC Planning.

2. Landslide profile wil be built from remote sensing imagery data and from ground survey.

3.A web portal will be develop to represent landslides data.

4. Different landslide assessment models will be applied to develop Landslide index. Based on this landslide index predictions will be made about future landslides using machine learning approches.

5.This whole work will be summarized into reserch paper by the end of Project.

Project Implementation Method

Project will be implemented in following steps:

1. Selection of Study area along the Karakuram Highway.

2. Collection of GPS points of main landslides.

3. Collection of satellitte imagery of the study area to digitalize landslides.

4. Development of Landslide and hazard index using different models (slope, aspect, geology, landcover, proximity to road, proximity to faults, proximity to streams)

5. Development of Area Under Curve to compare different models.

6. Accuraccy assessment of the results with ground survey data.

7. Based on collected data different machine learning alogrithms will be applied for future predition of the test area of Karakuram High way.

Benefits of the Project

1. It will play as a major knowledge hub for urban planners and architects of CPEC.

2. It will be helpfull for general Public to get information about Landslides on KKH

3. It will be helful to travelers and tourist of the area to know about dangerious/landsliding areas and take immediate steps to avoid such areas.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

1. Highly accurate assessment model will be recommend for future assessements of landslides.

2. Web portal for public to know about landslides with landslides index.

3. Prediction models based on different scenarios of highway.
