Development of a Force Feedback Glove for Interacting with Objects in Virtual Reality
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryA wearable force-feedback glove is to be developed that will produce forces on each of the fingers as well as the thumb by using electrostatic braking strips. The motion of the glove is to be interfaced with virtual reality. The forces are supposed to depict real life immersions when the user is interacting with objects in a virtual environment.
Project Objectives(a) Development of a force-feedback glove prototype that produces reactive force on each finger individually
(b) Interfacing of the glove with a virtual environment
(c) Interacting with virtual objects using the glove which produces a sense of grasp to the user
1. Selection and procurement of required hardware resources
2. Cutting of steel sheet into 16 cm long, 1 cm wide and 100 micron thick strips
3. Installing strips on glove using plastic guides
4. Achieving required braking force from the strips by using proper voltage source
5. Interfacing movement of glove fingers into a virtual environment
6. Creating an object in virtual reality and using the glove to grasp it
7. Applying force on the fingers whenever the object is grasped in virtual reality
8. Improving product by utilizing user feedback and analysis
Benefits of the Project(a) A lightweight and easy-to-wear product
(b) Precise motion tracking
(c) Product gives an immersive experience to the user
Technical Details of Final Deliverable(a) Development of an electrostatic braking system based force-feedback glove
(b) Creating a virtual environment
(c) Tracking movement of the fingers of the user through leap motion equipment
(d) Grasping objects in virtual reality
(e) Applying force on the fingers when an object is grasped in the virtual world
