Development in a Power Generation through a Renewable Highway Savonius Vertical Axis Wind Turbine System
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryCurrently the research and development activities in the field of sustainable energy, especially wind and solar, have been considerably increased, due to the worldwide energy crisis and high global emission. The horizontal axis wind turbine is generally used for commercial purposes and is not being used in domestic applications So; Savonius vertical axis wind turbine can be better option as it operates in varying wind speeds and is omnidirectional. This project, deal with savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) which is used to recover energy from moving of vehicles on highways.
The design of savonius is to placed on the sides of highways to produce power from moving of vehicles on both direction. This system mainly based on Savonius-rotor type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, equipped with Photovoltaic Panel and a Storage System (Battery). The proposed method can be used in both remote areas as well as building integration. The electrical generators may be installed in such a way that they are closed to vehicular passages (e.g., highway overpasses, tunnels, or train rails).
Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) specially designed and manufactured for producing electrical energy from wind energy of moving cars on highways for lighting purposes such as the highway lights, traffic signals, light guide lines, and charge the electric vehicle batteries.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective of this project is to design a savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) to regain wind energy from vehicles on the highway, to generate electrical power. As the wind energy is considered the fastest growing clean energy source. However, it is limited by variable natural wind pressure. Highways can provide a considerable amount of wind to drive a turbine due to high vehicle traffic.
The main purpose of this savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is to reduce energy crisis by use as renewable source to generate electricity and to give this electrical power to the highway lights, traffic signals, and also can be installed on the rooftop of the building and charges 12v battery and runs various 12 volt appliances without inverter.
The design of savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) consist blades bearings a shaft gears and generator. The savonius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) was invented by then finnish engineer Sigurd Johannes savionus in 1992 and patented in 1926. Europeans experimented with curved blades on vertical wind turbines for many decades. Nowadays Istanbul has installed savonius vertical axis wind turbine to generate electricity using the air turbulence generated by traffic.
Project Implementation MethodThe project implementation is based on two half cylindrical blades arranged in “S” which comprises on rotating plates one is upper end plate second is lower end plate. It has strong support at base which has a gear box the upper side of gear box is connected with shaft and bearing and lower side is connected with generator.
The drag force produce by wind which is strike on the “S” blades which rotates the upper and lower plates then the shaft will start rotating; the rotating shaft rotates the gear box when gears are starts rotating it increase the rpm of the generator hence maximum power will be produced. For extra energy Photovoltaic solar panel is used to get more power and the whole power is stored by using battery. This stored energy is used for highway lights, traffic signals; charge the batteries of electric vehicles. The rpm of generator depends on the natural wind, highway traffic wind and raining water which are increase the speed of blades.
Benefits of the ProjectThis project will contribute into the attainment the goal of SDGs. It helps to increase electrical power generation and reduce the energy crisis, Independence on wind direction, no additional control mechanisms are required, Electrical equipment can be placed at ground level, safety for workers, we installed self a small savonius vertical axis turbine and get energy operate home appliance, traffic signal, street lights and charge electrical vehicle. Some benefits are defined and listed below:
1. Independence on wind direction:
- Savonius vertical axis wind turbine has benefit that it is not affected of wind direction. It runs on both direction of moving vehicle. It is omnidirectional.
2. Safety for workers:
- Maintenance workers do not have to climb as high to reach the parts of the tower. They also have major components closure to the ground.
3. Scalability:
- The design can be scaled down to small sizes, even as small as what will effect on an urban rooftop. In cities, there may not be room for all renewable energy technologies.
4. Low noise emission
5. Simple and cheap construction.
6. Transportable from one location to another.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThis system has historically worked like other form of “Wind turbine” like horizontal-axis wind turbine, H-darrieus, Helixshape.
The drag force produce by wind which is strike blades, the shaft will start rotating then rotates the gear box it increases the rpm of the generator hence power will be produced and solar panel is used to get more power stored by using battery. The stored energy we will use for according to the requirements.
