Development and characterization of Automobile parts
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryThe rapid development of composite industry and the untapped potential it still has for the industry shall make a great future prospect. Textile composite tends to have high strength to weigh ratio and easier flexibility in design making them a perfect application For the Automobile sector. Hence this research will be based on investigating if these composites will provide increase in strength, tenacity and impact absorption compared to what the conventional market has to offer but also investigating its environmental friendly aspects, with alleged decrease in fuel consumption by an automotive vehicle by up to 6% to 10% Depending on the weight reduced by the Composite.
Project Objectives1. Appropriate selection of fiber based on experimentation and environmental aspects.
2. Manufacturing a composite with higher strength, torsion and greater durability then conventional products in the market.
3. Using appropriate method of manufacturing based on least emission of carbon footprint and precise production, preferably vacuum infusion.
4. Comparative effect of weight reduction on the automobile by using textile composite vs metal/plastic material.
5. Appropriate Procedures to converting composite manufacturing in to industrial scale manufacturing.
Project Implementation MethodVacuum infusion
The vacuum infusion process (VIP) is a technique that uses vacuum pressure to drive resin into a laminate. Vacuum infusion involves creating a vacuum inside a plastic film and systematically placing resin on one side of the plastic film. A vacuum suction machine sucks the air as well as resin from one side which infuses and reinforces the fibre. After all the fibre has been resin infused the plastic is sealed tightly so no air particles can seep through.
1. Replacement of existing products in the Pakistani market such as plastics and steel parts, which are either low quality or environmentally damaging.
2. Decreasing the fuel consumption of the vehicle by reducing its weight without compromising strength or quality.
3. Eliminating henious manufacturing methods that require high temperature and high power consumption that are harmful for environment as well as workers.
4. Affordable manufacturing can be done which therefore will produce affordable parts for the market for genuine use.
