Designing and Implementation of Brushless DC Motor Controller for Electric Bicycle

Our project is the Designing and implementation of BLDC motor controller for E.Bicycle. In this project we are creating a BLDC motor controller that can be easily installed on a bicycle and provide a stable speed control and transportation for people.

Project Summary

Our project is the Designing and implementation of BLDC motor controller for E.Bicycle.

In this project we are creating a BLDC motor controller that can be easily installed on a bicycle and provide a stable speed control and transportation for people. 

Project Objectives

The electric bike are able to drive in a speed of 15-20 km/h whose goal is to
primarily assist the cyclist when driving uphill and helping when there is a head-wind. The battery is able to power the bicycle for 15-20 minutes. The engine is to be optimized for the requirements and have a control system. Our main goal is to design and build a system that can control the speed and drive the motor more efficiently and provide a better battery timing for a long distance travel. 

Project Implementation Method

Initially the model of Hbridge driver circuitry is created to drive the BLDC motor in Proteus simulation software. PWM pulses are fed to H-bridge driver circuitry and response of the BLDC motor is studied. The speed control mechanism of BLDC motor driver is studied in simulation. Then the H-bridge converter circuitry is designed and developed to drive the BLDC motor. The assembly of BLDC motor and tyre is selected which act as rear wheel. The system is designed around Arduino microcontroller. Lithium ion battery is used to supply power. Program is developed for Arduino Uno microcontroller to generate PWM pulses which are fed to H-bridge driver. The performance of the BLDC motor driver is analyzed. After precise control of the motor and tyre assembly, the other subsystems like speedometer, indicator, accelerator, horn, braking system etc. are developed and tested. Motor controller and status monitoring controller acts in coordination due to which in any faulty or abnormality situation both interacts with each other to take necessary action. Finally the mechanical assembly and chassis is designed and developed.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The Final Deliverables will include:

[i] BLDC motor:

A BLDC motor is a Brushless DC motor. The rotor is made with permanent magnets placed in the centre of the motor while electromagnets are placed around it in the stator. A computer, using powerful transistors, then switches the polarity of these electromagnets which leads the rotor to turn. This enhances how well the energy stored in your battery is converted to movement, reduces the need for maintenance and removes the cap on speed as the only limit is now the power available in your system

[ii] Bicycles:

Is a vehicle consisting of two wheels held in a frame one behind the other, propelled by pedals and steered with handlebars attached to the front wheel.

[iii] BLDC motor controllers:

A BLDC motor controller detects the position of the rotor either by using sensors (for example, a Hall-effect sensor) or sensorlessly. The sensors measure the rotor's position and send out this data to the controller that make the decision of either accelerating, decelerating or braking of motor. 

[iv] Battery:

The battery we are using is of 36V, that works same as others batteries and once fully charged it have the capability of driving the bicycle for an hour.
