Project Title

Designing a portable device to measure protein concentration

Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject Summary

Measurement of the total protein concentration is also a crucial step in biochemistry and standard clinical laboratory procedures in many applications.

It is also important to accurately qualify protein in the sample before starting any protein Form of protein analysis, particularly comparative techniques. Different methods will be used to check and extend the same milk and raw egg sample items for determining the efficiency of the overall protein estimation data.

In this project, the biuret test, the qualitative analysis test for protein is extended to quantitative analysis of proteins by determining the concentration of protein in given sample.

The main sensing element for this project is Colour sensor TCS3200. The main objective of this project is to estimation of protein concentration in given sample of milk by exploiting the relation between spectral absorptivity and the concentration of protein. We propose to use optical sensor to accurately estimate the concentration of protein in different types of milk. The research objectives are accuracy, response time, portability, and sample size.

We intend to design and fabricate a prototype of a spectroscopic device that can determine the concentration of protein within 5 minutes with an accuracy of around 90% in a sample size not greater than 5ml collected from a dairy outlet.

Project Objectives

Our objectives are:

Project Implementation Method

We plan to design a portable device to measure protein concentration in food items.

The project implementation methods are based on:

Step no.1

To prepare sample solution of milk and raw egg by using copper sulphate as reagent and sodium hydro oxide as alkaline base.

This method is used to determine if the sample contains protein.

The presence of protein can be determined by observing the purple/violet colour.

This method is known as biuret test method.

We also prepare solution by centrifugation method.

Step no.2

Designing a device

To make circuit by interfacing of Arduino uno and RGB color sensor.

The white LED is connected in series with the circuit and sample.

The result will be shown in display.

Benefits of the Project

Some of the benefits that can be achieved from this project are:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

At the end of this project, we expect to have a proper device that can determine the protein concentration in a small sample size, with less time and high accuracy.
