1.2 Proposal Statement   

  

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the “corrugatedafin and tube heat exchanger” using vortexagenerators is required to investigate the heat transfer enhancement from the heat exchanger . CFD analysis of the fin and tube heat exchanger will be done using  ANSYS-Fluent, mainly to find out the thermalaresistance(heat transfer) and the pressureadrop(friction) in different cases. Finally the best parameters will be selected to enhance the heat transfer from the fin and tube heat exchanger.  

  

1.3 Scope of the Project   

  

Basically in this project we have to increase theaeffectiveness of the heat exchanger by increasing the heat transfer power of the fin and tube heat exchanger and reducing the pressure losses. These heat exchangers are used to cool , Ram air, auxiliary power units,hydraulics and gearboxes in the planes. Thus in this project we will increase the heat transfer either by increasing the area of the fin(making it corrugated) or by making the flow (flowing over the fin) turbulent(by using vortex generators),so that the flow becomes attached to the fin or bringing variation in the concerned parameters. All the calculations and the simulations will be performed in ansys fluent. 

Project Objectives

The numerical investigation consists of the procedures to get the problem’s solution by computing the errors. In finaand tube heat exchanger fin and the tubes are interconnected to each other. The assembly is then used to transfer heat from the fluid flowing inside the tubes to the fluid flowing through the fin or vice versa. we use the corrugated or the wavy fin instead of a plate fin,comparatively the area of the fin increases,the turbulence in the fluid flowing over the fin increases,the fluid flow becomes more attached to the fin,hence the over all heat transfer between the fluids increases.But generally the accompanied pressureadrop is also increased which is not appreciateable.Our aim is to increase the heat transfer rate(reduce the thermalaresistance) and also to decrease the pressure drop.The aircraft can get flame out due to icing in the combuster or in the engine oil,even the aircraft engine may catch fire because of excessive heat in the fuel or the hydraulic system.all these issues can be resolved by increasing the efficiency of the heat exchangers installed in the aircrafts.  

Project Implementation Method

The use of vortex generators simulate the whole scenario of transferring heat from a makes the flow turbulent and hence more attached to the fin wavy fin and tube heat exchanger. The reliable one is Ansys surface, and hence the heat transfer rate increases. Furthermore FLUENT. Finally the best performance of heat exchangers. These vortex generators parameters will be selected which enhance the heat transfer from actually produce vortices which last for few chord lengths on the fin and tube heat exchanger.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Fin and tube heat exchangers are of great importance in the field of heat transfer. Out of its many types wavy fin and tube heat exchangers are significant. In order to further augment the heat transfer passive techniques are used. Out of all those passive techniques, we have selected the vortex generators. Vortex generators make the flow turbulent and more attached to the fin surface. This interrupts the thermal boundary layer of flow. The intermixing of flow increases . Which in turn increases the convective heat transfer coefficient, the Nusselt number and finally the heat transfer is enhanced.
