Project Summary

This project describes the designing and fabrication of staircase climbing wheelchair.The Portable Electric Stair Climbing Wheelchair is used to help persons with reduced mobility go up and down the stairs and perform dual function electric wheelchair on stair and manual on ground,there are flexible handles at the bottom, easy for carrying patients in narrow space. This electric stair climbing wheelchair can carry load <160kg . This device can ascend or descend almost any type of stair from spiral staircases to wood or stone step surfaces without wear and tear. It does not require pre-installation track. The tracking system grips the stairs to ensure a solid contact and moves along each stair with smooth and quiet operation. The passenger remains in a natural upright position.It can Used in home for old people, school security, hospitals, hotels etc for emergency evacuation.

Project Objectives

  • To design and fabricate a wheelchair that will move and turn on ground as well as on stairs.
  • Decrease its weight by using light material (aluminum alloy)
  • Make it portable to easily move from one place to another.
  • To design wheelchair having maximum load bearing capacity up to 80kg.

Project Implementation Method

  • Literature review of this project to make understating
  • Calculation was done regarding the force acting on the frame and power requirement as well.
  • Design model on 3D software (creo parametric)
  • Stress and shear analysis
  • Fabrication are under the calculated senerio.
  • At the end Assembly job was done to finalize the project.

  • It can climb up and down stairs smoothly and steadily by track.
  • Easy to fold , go where you want
  • Requires minimal maintenance
  • Can be used as stretcher

  • Can be used when electrical power fails or is not available
