The project involves the application of building information modelling (BIM) technology for delivery of sustainable infrastructure through design efficiency. BIM is a revolutionary technology enabling efficient project feasibility for sustainable infrastructure delivery. It provides a collaborative platform for all project participants for real time improvements and corrections prior to start of construction. Integration of BIM with virtual reality (VR) is an innovative idea which can provide for efficient and informed decision-making by participants based on real time experience of end deliverable before construction even begins. For this project, a working model of BIM integrated with VR will be developed for infrastructure project.

When employed for delivery of sustainable product, the model can provide an efficient solution based on custom project constraints providing serious cost and time savings. As the client can experience the end product before its making through linking the 3D developed model with VR, this can result in increased stakeholder satisfaction crucial to project success. The end model of the infrastructure project when designed in line with the international sustainability standards like those provided by UN, ISO, LEEDS and UNEP/SETAC organizations can direct result in improvement of performance of several sustainable development goals especially sustainable infrastructure delivery and provision of sustainable communities.

Project Implementation Method

The project methodology includes the following steps:

  1. Literature Review and software learning
  2. Selection of a suitable project site.
  3. Using data from project documents and project participants define the main complex problems in the project.
  4. Development of 3D BIM model of infrastructure project using Auto Desk Revit 3D.
  5. Structural Analysis and Clash Detection of the developed model using a Revit plugin called Robot Structural Analysis. 
  6. Linking the BIM model with VR device for integrated working model development using Samsung VR Device.
  7. Comparison with various sustainability codes 
  8. Results and Discussion

The project will help serve the ICT, construction and transportation industry in terms of improved technology application. Currently, these sectors are facing severe innovation bottlenecks and are in dire need for practice improvements. Using BIM and VR, which are advanced ICT applications for development of infrastructure can result in various advantages:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our final year project delivery will be in the form of a working model for virtual reality experience of infrastructure projects for feasibility analysis. Based on that, structural improvements will be introduced comparing it with sustainability standards and an optimized design framework for maximum design efficiency will be suggested.
