Project Title

Design Development and Automation of Banana Fiber Twine machine

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

A twisting machine belongs to the category of one of the most common textile machinery that twists many single fibers into a single strand. Its function is to process yarn or yarn products after merging into a linear product for weaving and knitting.

Natural fibers are attracting the interest of engineers, researchers, professionals, and scientists all over the world as an alternative to petrochemical fibers such as polyester, Nylon etc. because of their superior properties such as high specific strength, low weight, low cost, fairly good mechanical properties, non-abrasive, eco-friendly, bio-degradable characteristics. Presently, with the increasing demand for sustainable fiber as raw material for textiles industries are looking at natural fibers.

The banana fruit crop is a major part of our dietary supply chain. Its fibers go to waste due to a lack of suitable sustainable technology for its commercial utilization. Banana fiber can be utilized as raw material for the industries in a range of products like paper, cardboard, tea bags, and currency notes and reinforced as polymer composite in fashionable dress materials. Banana fiber is an environmentally friendly fiber like jute fiber, and it has good mechanical properties due to its high alpha-cellulose and low lignin percentage as compared to other fibers. Currently, there is no twisting machine available in Pakistan which can handle these stiff banana fibers.

This proposal proposes the design and development of a banana fiber twisting machine. The Banana fibers, after passing through this machine will be converted into the banana yarn which is used for the manufacturing of different products like ropes, clothes, floor carpets, etc.

This machine will certainly effect the socioeconomic development of farmers and will help to improve the Textile exports of Pakistan.

Project Objectives

Following are the main objectives of our project,

  1. Designing a linear Actuator for Package building of twisted yarn.
  2. Constructing the automating mechanism system.
  3. Designing and developing a Fiber detection system for making the smooth banana yarn.
  4. Design a Control system for differential Speed of Flyer, Bobbin, Shaft,  Motor, and conveyor belt for making fine yarn.
  5. Installation of Slip rings for giving electrical path in rotating Flyer.
  6. Making Electrical Control Panel Board

Project Implementation Method

Our project implementation process mainly consists of four main stages.

1. Planing

2. Literature Review

2. Execution

3. Changes as per needs

4. Final Reports

PLANNING: In the first phase of the implementation, it's beneficial to establish a plan that meets the objectives of our Project. So, our team makes a proper plan in the meeting which is held between Supervisor, Co-supervisor, and Students. Basically, we distribute our project working into 6 main steps, which are given below.

1. Circuit designing

2. Software Simulation

3. Practical hardware testing on Breadboard

4. PCB manufacturing

5. Installing of electronics system on the machine.

LITERATURE REVIEW: We will start our project with the research papers to find the previous research related to our electronic parts like Actuators, Controllers, sensors, etc.

EXECUTION:  In the execution process we firstly work on the Circuit design. here we will start by making a list of components and devices for the system, then we will make a schematic diagram of a circuit.

Secondly, we will use some software for simulation and mathematical calculations for the circuit. After getting the successful results we will go to the next step, which is Testing.

In the Testing process, we w check the circuit on a breadboard by connecting it with sensors and actuators, to confirm whether the result of working of the circuit is similar to software simulation.

After this, we will go to the PCB manufacturing
In this step we will make a proper PCB from the schematic diagram, furthermore, we will also design an electrical panel board for electrical wiring.

Lastly, we would install the whole electronic control system like sensors, actuators, and circuits on the machine, to fulfill the objectives.

CHANGES AS PER NEED:  After installing the electronic system on banana fiber twisting we further some changes, according to the twist requirement of banana fiber.

FINAL REPORT:   After successful installation and work, we will also write a final report in the form of a journal paper.

Benefits of the Project

The Banana fiber project will create a lot of employment opportunities in urban and rural sectors as wealth from the waste concept. Banana fiber is eco-friendly, and biodegradable compared to all other synthetic fibers. Fiber is extracted from the leaf sheath or pseudostem of the banana plant. the use of “Banana” fiber for textile and other purposes as a natural material is a new concept for Pakistan. With the increasing environmental awareness and the growing importance of unfriendly fabrics, banana fiber has also been recognized for all its good qualities and now its application is increasing in other fields too such as apparel garments and home furnishings. However, considerable research work has been done by textile research organizations and it has been found that banana fiber can be a very promising source of natural fiber in the coming period. The mechanical property of the fiber is good compared to other fibers. Banana fiber is the best fiber with relatively good mechanical properties due to its high alpha-cellulose and low lignin percentage

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

As this project is intended to make a control and Automation system for the Banana fiber Twine Machine.

Following are the technical details of for Final deliverable

1. With the help of the installation of slip rings in the Flyer a package building mechanism is established which resulted in less human effort and time required for package twisting of Banana yarn. Further no there is still no such easy mechanism for package building of any fiber.

2. After the completion of the construction of Automating Feeding Mechanism, the issue of manual intake of fibers which takes a lot of time and human effort, is solved.

3.  The detection system of fiber will help to make a smooth yarn, because it allows only fixed number of fiber to feed.

4. With the help of differential system , we can manage the  twist per inch of yarn for the sustainability of strength of Banana yarn

5. The electrical panel  will help to control the whole process of Twisting and Feeding. Even though we can maintain the speed of twisting (twist per inch) or the feeding speed of fiber.
