Design and manufacturing of a cricket bowling machine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryBowling machines have been used in sports over a long period of time. Primarily bowling machines are used by the batsmen to improve their batting technique. It saves the bowler from overuse injuries like lumbar spine injuries and disk degeneration. The aim of the project is to design a robotic arm that bowls automatically at different adjustable speeds for the cricket practice. The balls are thrown by a robotic arm being energized by an extension spring for varying speeds and different lengths. The springs are extended and compressed through an electric motor engaged or disengaged via magnetic clutch. This arm type machine will be a relatively a good abstraction of reality of how bowlers’ ball in cricket. The machine will then be manufactured after being analyzed kinematically.
Project ObjectivesTo provide real life bowling experience for the batsman to improve their batting techniques having following parameters.
- Varying speeds from 100 kph to 130 kph.
- Variable lengths: Full length, Good Length and Short Pitch.
- Portable arm type bowling machine.
- Develop a cost effective (economic) and compact cricket bowling machine.
Following steps of the methodology have been followed while working on this project.
- Literature Review
- Finding the Research Gap
- Designing the Bowling Machine
- Conducting a kinematic Analysis
- Manufacturing of Bowling Machine
- Enables a batsmen to practice (usually in the nets)
- To hone specific skills through repetition of the ball being bowled at a certain length, line and speed.
- It can also be used when there is no-one available to bowl, or no one of the desired style or standard.
- The arm type bowling machine is mimic of how bowlers’ ball in real life.
A manufactured model of Bowling machine that can throw the ball at 100km/h to 130km/h speed and at short, good and full lengths on a cricket pitch of standard length i.e., 22 yards. The bowling machine is required to be compact, lightweight and portable.
