Design and Fabrication on Exoknee
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryApproximately one in ten adults suffer from a physical disability, 30.6 million people have difficulty in walking and climbing stairs. Current inventions to assist individuals with disability include both passive and active braces. The passive braces only provide stability. The active braces provide stability and power, but they’re not lightweight and are impractical outside of the research environment.
For this project, it is aimed to develop a lightweight wearable exoskeleton with a self-aligning passive degree of freedom that actively assists the user in walking, stair ascent, and sit-to-stand transition.
• Develop a Lightweight, wearable, active device for knee joint
• Use only one actuator with a self-aligning Passive Degree of Freedom.
Project Implementation Method
The project is targeted to help patients suffering from:
•Knee osteoarthritis
•Knee injury
•Inclusion body myositis
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe exo-knee to be developed will have the following features:
•Non-intrusive & lightweight wearable form factor
•Modes for walking, stair ascent and easy sit-to-stand adaptation
•Flexible mechanical joints and mechanically limited rotation to strictly follow the safety of the user
•Self-alignment with the knee joint of the user
•Customizable according to the stride length of the user
