Project Title

Design and Fabrication of Re entry Recovery Mechanism of a Nanosatellite

Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject Summary

Nano satellites present many advantages, particularly their attractive low cost and development time, which are combined with appropriate performances, making them often technology testers. need deployable parts like deployable antenna in order to

Due to their size specifications, Nano satellites in particular

achieve focal length long enough or for other purposes. For their characteristics like high packing ratio and low mass (1-10kg), self-deployable structures is a much appealing solution.

In this project, we will be working on design of a parachute based recovery mechanism for Nano satellites. We will be also designing and analyzing the same mechanism for payloads of Nano satellites. Provided with the facilities at DMAE and all the national level research and testing labs around in our approach, we will be looking into the trade-off studies, moving from known to unknown, applying the weighted matrix method and going through the process of design of experiment.

Finally, we will be fabricating the most feasible design and will test the mechanism on ground.

Project Objectives

1. To carry out mathematical modelling of recovery trajectory

2. To design recovery mechanism for Payload of Nano-satellite.

3. To design a concept demonstrator.

Project Implementation Method

The demand for our project has been put forward in TEKNOFEST 2019 in which they have asked for a safe re-entry recovery mechanism for a nano satellite. The chute deployment is expected to happen at about 5000 ft. So basically, the project as a whole has been divided into two parts. The development of a nano satellite which is being done by the students at SSRL CAE NUST (UmDan-1) while the development of satellite recovery mechanism is done by us at Iinstitute of Avionics Aeronautics, Air University.

To begin with, we first looked into the re-entry trajectory of the nano satellite. The chute recovery altitude is supposed to be 5000 ft. Further, we moved into the mathematical modelling for trajectory and parachute design calculations. Once the chute has been designed, we moved on for the selection of material of our chute. After completing with this, we finally moved on to the FEM simulations and CFD calculations. upon meeting our requirements, we finally moved to the development of prototype, testing the mechanism at low height and finalizing the design.

Benefits of the Project

1. To come up with mathematical modelling of recovery trajectory.

2. To come up with recovery mechanism for Payload of Nano-satellite.

3. To come up with design and fabrication of a concept demonstrator.
