Project Summary

The SAR II Corona Virus also known as COVID-19 has become a global pandemic which has become a big health crisis for which almost all the states implemented Lockdowns to decrease the spread of this deadly virus, which is a result affected in economy and employment crisis. The economic impact is enormous which has resulted in a huge loss for many business companies.

This project aims to design and fabricate a mask-making machine that will be less expensive and compact compared to the original machine. The machine will be capable of producing 3-ply masks made up of non-woven fabric and filters.

The machine will have a section to hold the raw material fabric and filter roll and then rollers will lead the mask through the production process where it is first folded and hemmed then the mask is welded and cut into accurate size.

Our expected outcome from this project is to create a mask that is equally good in terms of safety from external viruses and bacteria and at the same time, our machine will be compact and cheap as compared to the original machine.

Project Objectives

Our objective for this project is to design and fabricate a mask-making machine that will be less expensive and compact compared to the original machine. The machine will be capable of producing 3-ply masks, which will be made up of non-woven fabric and filters. And the speed of our machine will be variable so that it can also make a max of 50 masks per minute or less.  

Project Implementation Method

firstly we did research about the technicalities of our project so to how the machine works and what can be its limitations, then we thought about how we can improve the design of existing OEM machine to be more compact and inexpensive. after the thought process a complete CAD model of our machine is produced, now according to our design requirements we wil purchase the required equipment and will assemble our machine together.

Benefits of the Project

The objectives of our project are:

  • to make a machine which is much cheaper then  the OEM.
  • to make the machine compact so that more machines can be placed within a particular space.
  • the machine will be able to produce same quality 3 ply masks as the OEM.
  • the machine will be able to make a maximum of 50 masks per minute.
  • the machine speed can be varied.
  • the machine frame will be made of mild steel to make it strong and robust..

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

the machine's frame will be made from mild steel and a portion of machine holds the mask fabric and filter raw material which is then feed  into the system through rollers for sealing and cutting processes, these roller are driven by a dc motor wich is connected to the rollers through a chain sprocket system, the motor speed is varied through a inverter module which can run the motor upto 3000 rpm, the motor is attached to a gear box so the final angular velocity will be 50rpm. An important part of the machine is ultrasonic generator which is responsible for sealing the mask fabric and filters together. after that the 3ply mask fabric is cut into accurate sizes.
