Design and Fabrication of a Roadside Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryThe project involves designing an H-darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for use in roadside applications. The turbine will utilize the wind energy on the roadside and convert it into useful power. The turbine will be designed with increased efficiency and reduced cut-in speed. This is done by implementing a mechanism of slats on the blades of the turbine that reduce the cut-in speed of the turbine making it suitable for use in the wind conditions of Pakistan.
Project Objectives- Fabricating the complete working model of the vertical axis wind turbine capable of generating electricity.
- Ansys and Q-blade analysis to back the results.
The project implementation methodology includes a number of steps stated below:
- Finalizing the design keeping in view the wind data and environmental conditions.
- Analysis of current designs existing in the market.
- Design modifications in terms of increasing the efficiency.
- CAD modeling and software simulations including Ansys, Q-blade
- Design fabrication which includes the manufacturing of the complete working prototype.
The project has tremendous potential in the field of renewable energy production, especially in a country like Pakistan where wind energy potential has not been completely utilized. The project will add to the electricity production of our country by harnessing wind energy from fast-moving vehicles on the roadsides of highways.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverable includes the working model of a roadside vertical axis wind turbine capable of generating electricity. The working will be demonstrated by placing it aside of fast-moving cars and the power generated will be noted and compared to pre-existing designs.
