Project Summary

 The project idea is to design a Stairlift, as people with locomotor disabilities(due to various diseases like arthritis, post-polio syndrome, and, vascular disease) can not travel through any low-rise(Multistory) building so stairlifts are used to carry those people to any low rise building but the already available stairlifts are very expensive($2000 to  $6000) and people can not afford, so to overcome this issue a low-cost stairlift will be designed which is not only cheap but also utilize easily/locally available materials. In addition, this project complies law in "The Accessibility Code of Pakistan 2006". which states “it’s necessary requirement of HEC to have the stairlifts in the multistory(Low rise Buildings) public places which the universities have to follow, but as the lifts are quite expensive they are not in common use.”

An already available model is shown in Fig-1, showing the cost parameter high.

Project Objectives

  1. To design and install the track for the upper part of the stairlift.
  2. To design the upper structure(skeleton) and the chassis of the chair.
  3. To design motor drive, gears, power source, and integrate with other components
  4. To assemble the whole system and install it in the department of Electronic Engineering

Project Implementation Method

The stairlift, that glides up and down, will be installed at the Department of Electronics Engineering MUET, following are the steps through which the project will proceed.

  1. Install a Frame on stairs by using long screws.
  2. Install Reck on the Frame
  3. Design and install chassis on a frame by using 8 Bearings
  4. Design and install power system, motor, and motor driver on chassis
  5. Design and install Upper structure (Sitting area) onto chassis
  6. Install the control panel at the armrest.

Besides the installed Rack/track stairlift has two parts, the Body part, and the Chassis part.

  • Body Part:

In the body part, there is armrest, footrest, and seat part which contains cushions, buckle, safety belt, and complete structure of the chair(Patient sitting area) and the Armrest contains the control panel through which stairlift can be driven up and down, or can be stopped.

  • Chassis part:

In the chassis part there is a power system that drives the motor, motor driver, and indicating components e.g LEDs, buzzers, Motor with Pinion gear, motor driver, and Breaking system(For which Clutch motor will be used)

The conceptual diagram of  the project is shown in Fig-2:

After completing assembly, electronic components will be connected that is the motor will be connected with Arduino via motor driver, power will be provided to the motor,  motor driver, Arduino UNO, and other electronic components, the control part(keypad), and indicating components(LED’s & Buzzers) will be connected with Arduino and Arduino will be programmed accordingly to work properly, that is to rotate the motor in one direction (to move stairlift Up) while pressing one button, and rotating other direction (to move stairlift down) while pressing other button and stopping stairlift while pressing the stop button.

The simulated circuit on proteus is shown in Fig-3.

Benefits of the Project

  1. People, with locomotor disabilities, can travel through any low-rise building by using this stairlift.
  2. They can get it on Low cost.
  3. To overcome the limitations of elevators and escalators.
  4.  It will help to follow the law in “The Accessibility code of Pakistan 2006 ” which describes that it’s necessary for all  HEC recognized universities to have the stairlifts installed  in the multistory(Low rise) Buildings of the university.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product is a moveable chair called "Stairlift", that glides up and moves down on a pre-installed Rail/track and carries the disabled and old age people to the up-story building, some of the specifications of the project are given below:

  1. Weight capacity= 100Kg
  2. Voltage required= 24 volt DC
  3. The total length of Track= 10 Feet
  4. Inactive if the safety belt is unlocked.

After design and installation, a moveable stairlift will be ready to carry disabled people to up-story building, the prototype as designed in 3D is given in Fig-4.
