Engine testbed system is a fundamental tool to measure dynamic parameters, economic performance and reliability of an aircraft Engine, and its automation and accuracy directly influence the precision of acquired data. In this project, we will design a digital Data Acquisition (DAQ) system for a vintage aircraft engine testbed that lacks the capability of displaying all the analyzed parameters at one convenient location (one panel-one screen). Recording such measurements in the vintage testbed is not only time consuming but also prone to human errors. Digitizing such a measurement system requires a Data Acquisition (DAQ) system capable of recording these parameters and displaying them on one screen-one panel monitor. The challenge in designing upgrades to the vintage systems arises with a need to build and integrate a digital measurement system from scratch with a minimal budget and modifications to the existing vintage system. The proposed design not only displays all the key performance/maintenance parameters of the gas turbine engines for the operator as well as a quality inspector on separate screens but also records the data for further processing / archiving.

Project Objectives
  1. Study of suitable DAQ (Data Acquisition) options for modification of existing instrumentation system of aircraft engine testbed.
  2. Design of DAQ system and selection of suitable hardware required for the upgrade.
  3. Design Graphical User Interface (GUI) using suitable software for instrument screen for both engine operator and quality inspector.
  4. Estimation of funds requirement as well as the timeline for development of DAQ system for the aircraft engine testbed.
  5. Development of a Lab model of the DAQ system to closely match the original setup.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable
  1. Selection of DAQ hardware that can support multiple sensors (Pressure, Temperature, RPM, Vibration, and Fuel Flow Rate)
  2. Selection of suitable user-friendly software to support the selected hardware
  3. Feasibility report containing details of hardware, software, human resource as well as the timelineĀ 
  4. A proof of concept lab model with all types of sensors available at the actual engine testbed.
