Project Title

Design and Development of Capsule Endoscopy Prototype

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure which is being performed in order to examine digestive tract of a patient. In this procedure we use an endoscope, which is a long flexible tube with light and also a camera attached to it, so the doctor can view pictures of the digestive tract on a color TV monitor. Endoscopy is a safe procedure but it still has many potential complications like bleeding, infection, perforation (tear in the gut wall), reaction to sedation etc. The proposed idea is of capsule endoscopy, which is a highly recommended and acceptable alternative for the patients refusing to or who are unfit for conventional endoscopy. In this project, we will be constructing a small capsule and inside this small capsule we will install a wireless camera to analyze the digestive tract. In this project we will not be using the capsule on a human but on an artificial body (that would mimic the digestive tract), the capsule will be placed inside the artificial body and visualize on the colored monitor screen. So in this way, we will be creating an artificial environment of an actual capsule endoscopy function.

Project Objectives

To design and develop a prototype for capsule endoscopy . To design capsule keeping in mind the size of gastrointestinal tract of Human Beings as capsule endoscopy is mostly used for diagnosing GI tract diseases . To design an artificial body

Project Implementation Method

As we are creating a prototype, so we cannot implement our design on the human beings. So, that’s why we have to design an artificial body. After consultation with the doctors, we have come upon a solution to test our capsule inside the warm bottle. We will be designing the GI tract using the water bottle and the pipes. The size of these pipes will be same as the dimensions of our small intestine and esophagus. We will be placing stones of different colors inside the warm bottle and we will be analyzing it on the receiving end. In this way we are proposing to test our design and to mimic the GI tract.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits: ? Capsule endoscopy helps the doctor to examine the small intestine which cannot be reached by traditional methods of endoscopy. ? The capsule endoscopy is done in order to search for a cause of excessive bleeding, ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases and tumor of the small intestine.

Beneficiaries:

The traditional endoscopy is a very painful procedure because in it gastroscope and colonoscope is being pushed through mouth and anus. In the traditional endoscopy sedation and local anesthesia is also being used and it can cause many negative reactions on the patients. Whereas, the capsule endoscopy is a painless procedure in which you take the capsule just like an ordinary medicine and in this procedure we don’t require any kind of anesthesia, there is also no risk of cross infection and it also has excellent patient acceptance. So, it can provide a relief to the patients from the pain caused by traditional endoscopy.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

? The output of analog camera is Composite Video Baseband Signal (CVBS) ? The Transmitter generates RF signals in the frequency of television spectrum ? The length of Helical Antenna depends on the frequency of RF Signal ? The outer shell of capsule is designed by using Poly-carbonate on the 3D-Printer ? The power consumption of device 1 Ampere and operating voltages are 5-12V ? We do not require any external de-modulator circuitry at the receiver end it can be easily visualize on the Monitor Screen
