Design & Analysis of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for Smart Power Generation.
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryOne of the best sources of energy that can apply the concept of sustainability is renewable energy such as sun, wind, and rivers. The positive point of wind energy is that it is useful for 24 hours all the year. In this project, we shall discuss the design and analysis of wind turbine that can convert wind by using Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) to useful energy. Here we shall discuss how the electricity will be collected from the highway by using a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. (VAWT). By this method, the overall cost per unit of energy produces is less than the cost of new coal, natural gas, and its installation. So, the implementation can be made easier than any other method.
Project ObjectivesThe purpose of this project is to design and analyze a VAWT from basic components under the constraints of assembly time and cost effectiveness.
The main objectives of this project are;
1 Design of the prototype of vertical axis wind turbine that could generate power under relatively low wind velocities.
2 Design of inverter which will be used to smooth the variable output of the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT).
The prototype of the VAWT consists of different parts which are needed to be fabricated as parts of the main assembly. Following are the parts of VAWT, to be designed:
Base: The base will be made of 50 cm (estimated) height and 40 cm wide with 1inch thickness. Fabrication of the base aims at providing strong support to the turbine against the high-speed wind. It is designed in such a way as to reduce the vibrations of the turbine due to turbulent winds. The base holds the rotor with a fixed shaft perpendicular to the rotor. The base also holds the power generating unit.
Blades: galvanized steel will be used as turbine blades. The blades will be approximately 1mm thick. Four blades of equal length 60 cm and width of 15 cm will be used. These blades will be attached perpendicular to the rotor.
Shaft: While designing the shaft of blades it should be properly fitted to the blade, the shaft should be as possible as less in thickness & light in weight. It will be made up of hollow Aluminium which is very light weight. Generator: Dynamo will be employed to produce electricity.
Drive system: A gear mechanism will be utilized to transmit the power from the turbine to the generator. The will be designed to change DC into AC and the step-up transformer expands the voltage, required to run the device.
- Production of clean energy.
- Cheaper to produce than horizontal axis turbines.
- More easily installed compared to other wind turbine types.
- Transportable from one location to another.
- Equipped with low-speed blades, lessening the risk to people and birds.
- Function in extreme weather, with variable winds and even mountain conditions.
- VAWTs are not affected by the direction of the wind which is useful in areas where the wind changes direction frequently or quickly.
- VAWTs are ideal for both rural and urban applications including roof top installations.
- VAWTs are more esthetically pleasing.
On the expanding cost of non-inexhaustible assets, sustainable assets are increasingly sought after. In this system, we make utilization of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for creating energy, with the inverter. A Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is a kind of wind turbine where the principal rotor shaft is set transverse to the breeze while the fundamental parts are situated at the base of the turbine. This framework is controlled by AT Mega 328 microcontroller, it comprises a vertical axis windmill, DC motor, 12V battery, DC inverter, MOSFET switch, LCD, and transformer. The windmill produces mechanical energy when wind courses through the turbine. This mechanical energy is changed over into electrical energy by dynamo, the power esteems are shown on LCD. The Vertical Axis Windmill converts the energy of wind into kinetic energy by means of blades and charges the 12V battery. As the battery is switched on, the inverter changes over DC into AC, and the step-up transformer expands the voltage, required to run the device. MOSFET is a transistor that manages the voltage and after that, the load is powered.
