Dengue Mosquito Alert System
Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject Summary Motivation:The global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades. There are an estimated 390 million infections each year. Pakistan is the latest Asian country to suffer a severe outbreak of the disease. From 8 July to 12 November 2019, a total of 47,120 confirmed cases of dengue fever, including 75 deaths, were reported from the four provinces (KP, Punjab, Baluchistan, and Sindh), Islamabad, and AJK. Therefore, Dengue Mosquito control is important as they are extremely harmful pests key source to spread various infectious diseases including dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other disease agents.
Proposed solution:To fight against the threatening issue, we are intended to build a “Dengue Mosquito Alert System”. Our system will detect dengue mosquitos (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) and alert the user so they can proceed their precautionary actions.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives of our project are the following:-
- The final deliverable of our proposed project will be a complete system which will be able to detect dengue mosquitos (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) and alert the user to ensure prevention of dengue virus. Further, we are intended to integrate our system with additional functionality which will be activated automatically when the system detect dengue mosquitoes.
- As dengue prevention is a challenging issue for Pakistan, therefore, our proposed project will pay a valuable contribution in dengue prevention and we are well determined to put our maximum effort so that our final year project can be considered as a valuable achievement of our degree.
- Our aim is to build a complete system which meets the specifications within the specified time and budget. For this purpose, we have analyzed the overall project cost before the development phase. Also, we have scheduled our projects and defined milestones to keep on track.
The proposed system is equipped with a clean, white mosquito observation pad that lures adult mosquitoes. An attached camera records images of the mosquitoes on the pad, attracted by the lures. To lure the mosquitoes, an Ultra Violet (UV) Light-Emitting Diode (LED), a heat pad, and CO2 generating chemicals (sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid) will be used. The white observation pad will be designed to induce mosquito landing and block the background for easier image processing. For the lighting of the observation pad, a white visible light LED lamp equipped with a timer was attached. Streamed images from the webcam are sent to the computer for image processing.
To classify the mosquitoes, we will be using image processing and deep learning architecture. For this purpose, we have already collected our dataset on which we will apply cognitive neural network (CNN) model to achieve the most optimize result. The overall structure of the system is shown in the below figure.

The benefits of our projects are the following:-
1. Automated System:
This project will play a vital role in dengue prevention and controlling as it automates the detection system. Automation keeps everyone safe and productive.
2. Vast Application Domain:
Our project has a vast application domain:-
- It can be used in homes
- It can be used in hospital wards to maximize the safety for dengue patience.
- It can be used in laboratories for experimental purpose as well.
3. Improved user safety:
Our system will provide sense of surety and safety to the users.
4. Uniqueness:
There is no competitive product in the market for commercial purpose. Hence, we have competitive advantages as well.
5. Higher Accuracy:
We are using advanced machine learning and image processing algorithms to achieve maximize accuracy rate.
6. Easy integration:
Our complete system is very easy to integrate. It is consist of very small and simple hardware components.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final deliverable of our project will be a hardware based system which will be able to detect dengue mosquitoes and also it will alert the user. The system will be in a complete working formation at the final stage.
The complete system will consist of the following integrated hardware:-
- Ultra Violet LED and heat pad - to attract the mosquitoes.
- White Observation Sheet- to block the background for easier image processing.
- CO2 generating chemicals- sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid to lure the mosquitoes towards our platform.
- Webcam- a high resolution webcam to capture live images for image processing.
- Computer- with high quality GPU and power supply to execute the advanced machine learning and image processing algorithms smoothly to give the final result.
In short, the final deliverable of our project will be a complete system consist of hardware devices. The final deliverable will be a fully implemented system which satisfy all its requirements.
