Project Title

De-Sulphation of Lead Acid batteries using high current pulsating technique

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

Battery regeneration system is an electronic control device which could relief a used lead-Acid battery. After certain period of time, battery plates get sulfated as result of side product of charging and discharging which results in short storage time due to improper charging of batteries.A high frequency charging and discharging technique is used to break the sulfation layer and relife the battery for proper charging and discharging cycles.

Project Objectives

Batteries have a certain life span normally of 2 years. After this period, the battery is of no use for the consumer and they must buy a new one. Our main target is to reuse the old batteries by treating them through de-sulphation process, hence saving enormous amount of time and cost on national level.

Project Implementation Method

  • Sulfation occurs when a battery is deprived of a full charge, it builds up and remains on battery plates. When too much Sulfation occurs, it can impede the chemical to electrical conversion.
  • We will be using BJT Transistors with certain transition frequencies at the Output.
  • Due to the accumulation of extremely hard sulphate crystals, we will be adopting desulphation process by applying ultra sonic pulse treatment method.
  • Many say that reversing the effects is considered highly unlikely, by applying pulses to battery terminals to prevent and reverse sulfation on a healthy battery, they will not reverse the damage completely and are not always recommended.
  • But we will be applying High Freq Ultrasonic Pulses to the Battery Terminals to clean sulphate with high Amplitude Pulse generation carrying large amount of current
  • For the generation of Pulses we will be using PIC Controller 18F452 and ORCAD software for the  simulation purposes.
  • Ultrasonic Treatment is quite different from Pulse Conditioning, as it is also used to remove residue from jewelry to clean up sophisticated component where we cannot use brushes, by putting them inside the container of distilled water with 98% Gravity with no minerals
  • In industry Ultrasonic pulses are used for the permanent residual removal and also to clean up the  aircraft components
  • The treatment cycle of Battery Desulfation is done in total 3 cycles (Desulfation, Charging and Discharging).
  • Desulfation Cycle takes usually 8 hours to desulfate the crystals then the Charging cycle takes 6-8 hours and the Discharging cycle takes 4 hours
  • By repeating these 3 cycles again n again the capacity time of the battery in the Discharge cycle increases 2 times the life of the battery from 80 to 85%.

Benefits of the Project

  • Now-a-days industries are adpoting solar technologies which uses huge batteries bank to store energy. We will give them a solution to their problem by giving them a solution to their battery health problems and replacement issues.
  • Lead is a dangerous substance and used batteries waste is a threat to environment and eco-system. By using this product we can reuse batteries and minimize the usage of new batteries production and wastage.
  • Pakistan imports lead hence by using this solution we can help stabilize our economy by minimizing imports.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product is a device containing charger as well as discharger and desulfating unit . It will be a hybrid device which when connected to a battery then it will charge as well as discharge the battery and a graph will be drawn giving the exact amount and density of crystals which will serve as a basis for setting up pulse frequency which will remove the sulfates from the battery. This cycle will last 28 hours atleast, 8 hours for charging and 8 hours for discharging and 4 hours for desulfation and then again 8 hours for charging.
