Introduction:
Coming with a better living standard, higher quality of traveling is demanded. Increasing complexities in vehicle systems, compounded with hidden and hard to reach automotive components makes it challenging to identify faults and collect necessary data during operation of the vehicle which ultimately result in increasing road accidents day by day.
Sensors are critical components in a modern automobile. Sensors can collect each and every data of the process running inside the hood. Several type of sensors like accelerometer, camera module, ultrasonic sensor, temperature sensors, GPS modules etc. collect minute level information thereby transferring to the raspberry pi zero which then store it locally as well as send it to the servers.
During travelling we cannot determine that everything is up to the mark or not and we cannot even detect any problem without the help of any technical expert. Data acquisition is very critical in automobiles. Analyses of collected after the driving sessions enables the driver to improve driving behaviour and take better decisions in real time during driving for enhanced safety. It helps in preventive maintenance of key components. Machine learning algorithms, when applied to sufficiently large data sets of vehicles collected during operation, can give fruitful insights for better design of systems. The system will also recognize the face of driver and if it is some unauthorized person then it will avoid vehicle from starting unless and until manual access is provided by the driver through the app.
Proposed Framework:
The system will consist of microcontroller with sensors attached to it. The microcontroller will get all the information about the vehicles by using sensors and OBD 2 cable. And then send it to the remote server where it will be analysed and stored. Also data is stored locally on SD card which can be used for diagnostic purpose in case of accident.
The android application will fetch data from remote server and the driver will be able to see all the statistics on the android app. Also in case of accident or emergency it will send location and alert to emergency department so that first aid can be provided on time.
The system will also consist of an relay module attached to a Node MCU microcontroller. The system will check the face of driver if the face is in the list of authorized drivers then it will allow vehicle to start smoothly otherwise it will turn off the relay switch and the vehicle can’t be able to start unless and until it is manually allowed by the authorized owner with the help of android app. This will help in reduction of vehicle thefts.
Conclusion:
By developing this system we can not only be able to build more safer vehicles but also reduce accidents/potential risks by timely alerting the driver and emergency departments and can save a lot of lives. Also this project will help us to reduce the vehicle theft.
The system will consist of a raspberry pi zero w having SD card for local storage and internet module to send data to remote server. Different sensors accelerometer, camera module, ultrasonic sensor, temperature sensors, GPS modules, LPG Leakage Sensor and fire detection sensors will be attached to centralized raspberry pi.
Raspberry pi will collect data from all the sensors and send it to remote server where data would be stored and analysed.
The driver can see the vehicles statistics by using android application. In order to avoid mobile usage during driving, voice enabled feature will be provided in the android so that in case of potential threat , the app can communicate with driver by using voice commands.
It will alert the driver on over speeding , also in case of accident it will send a message to local emergency cell or police along with the location coordinated and picture.
The system will reduce the vehicle theft by recognizing the face of driver and just provide access to authorized users.
The system will also contribute to reduce air pollution by monitoring the gases emitted by vehicle with the help of gas sensors and comparing their values to optimum values of gases and in case if the quantity of harmful gases are high then it will alert the driver about it.
According to Word Bank Study, nearly 1.25 million people die globally in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. And one of the major reasons for road accidents are due to negligence of driver. If this project got succeeded then we can safe life of these people by alerting driver about possible threats.
Also the data collected from different vehicles about the behaviour of vehicle and driver can be used by Automotive Industry to develop better and safe vehicles in the future.
Reduction in road accidents can aso help Government of Pakistan , to save the economical loss caused by road accidents which also contribute to overall GDP of Pakistan as per report of a World Bank 10% reduction in road traffic deaths raises per capita real GDP by 3.6% over a 24-year horizon.
This project will also contribute to the reduction of air pollution which help us to make our environment clean.
The major deliverable will be a complete system in which a working prototype is made which can acquire data from different sensors and store them in local storage as well as send it remotely to the server.
An Android Application will also be part of this system through which driver can see data in visual form.
Lastly, the data acquired from different vehicles will be analysed with the help of machine learning algorithms and a detail report will be made
