Project Summary

People with paralyzed upper limbs and children with cerebral palsy do not have a controlled movement. The messages from their brain do not transmit properly and the movement is either completely stopped or uncontrolled.  Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and brain-computer interface (BCI) have a great impact on assistive and rehabilitation gadgets. This project focuses on an exoskeleton which will take EEG signals from the brain and will move the exoskeleton using BCI. The mechanical system will consist of three degrees of freedom of wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. Shoulder and elbow joints will be passive joints and wrist joint will be active joint. The system can be used for daily tasks and therapies. We shall redesign and improve an already designed exoskeleton to make it lighter and more cost-effective. Initially, we will use an open-access four class EEG data set for the processing. After the initial processing, we will create our database using EEG headset. The data will be filtered and then windowed by taking small subsets of the data for processing and analysis. After windowing, features will be extracted from the data and classification algorithms will be applied for the maximum accuracy.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to design an upper limb exoskeleton which will provide assistance to people having paralyzed upper limb or cerebral palsy in their daily tasks. 

Project Implementation Method

The project will be implemented in two parts. One is the mechanical design part and the other part is Brain-computer interface part. two of the group members are working on each part. After the completion of both parts project will be integrated and testing phase will start.

Benefits of the Project

Our project is focused on people with paralyzed upper limbs and cerebral palsy. This project will benefit such people by providing them with assistance in their daily tasks by helping them move their upper limb and thus making their lives easier. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final project deliverables:

  • Recording of EEG (MI) Dataset From Subjects using a headset 
  • Algorithm: Filtering, windowing, data extraction, Data Classification Through Machine Learning Algorithm.
  • Mechanical: CAD design and fabrication of algorithm
  • Electronics/ control system of the exoskeleton
