Computational Modal Analysis of a Low Pressure Turbine blade of Different Materials

 Low pressure turbine is the last turbine stage in a gas turbine engine. As per research, LPT is quite heavy and is even up to one third of the total weight of the engine. A lighter and stiffer material is required to decrease the weight of the stage for better performance of the engine.

Project Summary

 Low pressure turbine is the last turbine stage in a gas turbine engine. As per research, LPT is quite heavy and is even up to one third of the total weight of the engine. A lighter and stiffer material is required to decrease the weight of the stage for better performance of the engine. 
In this project, modal analysis of the specified low pressure turbine blade is done computationally, by comparing nickel base and titanium base materials.

Project Objectives

  • Selection of the most suitable material for the low pressure stage of a gas turbine engine using computational modal analysis.
  • Determination of modal paramters of the chosen material.

Project Implementation Method

  • Computational Modal analysis of LPT blade using Ni based and Ti-Al alloys.
  • Selection of the most suitable material by comparing the frequency, mass and stiffness.
  • Determination of modal parameters for each material.

  • A detailed research on the list of materials that are most suitable for use in a Low pressure stage of a gas turbine engine.
  • The implementation results in overall mass reduction of the LPT stage.
  • Moreover, the chosen material has a high natural frequency thus enabling better vibrational performance.
