Cloud Based Profiling of Air Quality using Wireless Sensor Network.
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryDue to rapid increase in pollution the Health problems are increasing day by day. Air pollution affects our day to day activities and quality of life. It poses a threat to the ecosystem and the quality of life on the planet. 16% of deaths worldwide are caused by pollution-related diseases. Due to this various disease are spreading out and weather is becoming more hot and hot.
The dire need to monitor air quality is very glaring, owing to increased industrial activities over the past years. People need to know the extent to which their activities affect air quality. This project is about to design a Wireless Sensor Network which will monitor Air Quality and detect the poisonous gases in different polluted cities of Pakistan. The air pollution monitoring system is designed to monitor and analyze air quality in real-time and log data to a remote server, keeping the data updated over the internet. This system is planned to be portable, energy-efficient, connected to cloud for central data storage, access and management. The results will be also seen on an Android application and also the results will be stored on an on Board SD card. From the results we will conclude about the AQI values, which show the accurate measurement of the Air Quality.
The project aims to use IoT server, Thingspeak, for data presentation and analysis. The android application is designed for the user to conveniently access the data.
The potential beneficiaries of this project are the public at large, as well as Ministry of Climate Change, decision and policy makers, environmental impact assessors. This project has potential for contribution in SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well Being), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) of the United Nations.
Project Objectives1) To design and present an Air Quality measurement system that is composed of a distributed sensor network connected to a cloud system forming a Wireless Sensor Network(WSN).
2) To utilize the designed prototype for measuring different greenhouse gases at different altitudes and at different cities(urban and rural).
3) To compare this data with standard values provided by the National Climate Exchange as well as Previous climate studies.
4) To come with an air monitoring system that will enable and warn the climate agencies in particular and general public in general about alarming rate of the rising dust and greenhouse gases, and to take appropriate measures to restore stable air composition.
Project Implementation MethodPrevious relevant studies undertaken in different parts of the world were referred to understand the different ways in which such projects have been implemented. In this regard, investigations inspired by industry, as well as work done in universities (both national and international) were studied.
Different hazardous pollutants were listed. Then they were ranked and the most critical ones, based on previous reports from within the country, were selected for study. Then different sensors available in the market were surveyed and shortlisted. Thereafter, different microcontrollers available, with their features, were compared and shortlisted.
Different cloud services were compared and one shortlisted.
The relevant equipment was purchased, tested and integrated with the microcontroller. Android application is in the final stages of completion.
As part of the future plan, the following will be done:
- SD card Module for storing the sensors data
- To expand the Analog Pin of the Microcontroller.
- To connect the other two sensors ( MQ131 and MQ135 ).
- After the completion of the Hardware , it will be placed in a different polluted regions to record the desired data and calculate the AQI.
1) As different cities of Pakistan are becoming more industrialized, urbanized and densely populated, maintaining a good ambient Air Quality becomes a major challenge. It is recognized that there is a pressing need to address the air pollution issues in these cities.
2) Once we get the recorded data from the sensors then it will be compare with some standard values through the application. From the comparison it will conclude that which area or city is under the attack of air pollution. If the concentration of the mentioned gases in that area was high then the expected, then it will be a serious issue.
3) Then it will be informed the people about this serious issue through TV, through social media, and aware them about its side effects and also to inform the people that the lack of rains and extreme warm weather is the result of high concentration of these gases in their city or area atmosphere.
4). We also intend to use the collected data to analyse the effects of air quality on propagation of wireless signals through the atmosphere. So this data is precious for future studies related to next generation mobile communications as well.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThis project will be a Hardware system which will monitor the Air Quality at different polluted cities of Pakistan.
Relevant sensors will be connected to a suitable Microcontroller. The Microcontroller will collect the data from the sensors and push it to a Cloud server through Wi-Fi. The cloud server has two options whether to keep the data private or public. Also an Android application which will show the data which was uploaded to the Cloud server. Also an on board SD card which store the recorded data. From the results Air Quality index(AQI) will be calculated. The AQI shows the correct Air Quality of an area.
In short, this is a hardware system that is connected to user and the Internet via the Cloud /IoT Server. This project has important implications for everyone who is living and breathing.
