Centralized Control of Distribution System
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary- Current Electrical power distribution systems are widely decentralized. The most important part of any distribution system is metering and billing as it has great impact on economy and the justified use of resources. Distribution requires a control over the consumers supply along with the charges and facilities like maintenance etc.
•Many techniques are being introduced everyday for distribution system tasks like introduction of smart metering, prepaid electric meters. It has been seen that smart meters in a decentralized systems are not easy to manage and they require further effort that makes smart meters and distribution systems to not be compatible. These compatibility issues have been a major source of nuisance and for loss of resources and many consumers use or exploit these issues and they end up hacking the meters which can be considered as a theft of national resources along with this issue the decentralization of this system has led to the higher authorities not knowing what is happening on the ground level and this also makes it difficult to correctly manage these type of issues. This project deals with the fore mentioned issues by introducing two techniques:
1.By Centralizing the current distribution system.
2.By introducing Wi-Fi based metering.
•By centralizing the current decentralized system it is meant that a new system will not be introduced but the current system will be transformed using Wi-fi based smart meters.
•A centralized system is a system where all the controlling and scheduling is done by one specific entity.
•In this project the Wi-Fi based electrical meters will be designed and developed that will communicate with each other and a single entity will assigned that can either be fashioned as a supervisory control or can be used to automate the task of control and management of each consumer.

•In this project the Wi-Fi based electrical meters will be designed and developed that will communicate with each other and a single entity will assigned that can either be fashioned as a supervisory control or can be used to automate the task of control and management of each consumer. Hardware model of the proposed system will be designed and fabricated. The fabricated model will be analyzed. Results of hardware model and simulation model will be compared.
Project Objectives- To investigate theft issues in existing distribution system.
- To review existing trends in advanced metering infrastructure in distribution system.
- To propose a centralized system using communication enabled smart meters.
- To simulate the proposed design on Proteus 8.5 software.
- To develop and analyze hardware model of the proposed system.
- Design a centralized control scheme for small scale distribution system
- Simulation modelling and analysis using Proteus 8.5 software
- Development of hardware prototype of the proposed system
- Analysis of the developed hardware model
- Comparison of simulation and hardware results
- Reduction in theft of Electrical Energy
- Current decentralized distribution system will be be centralized.
- Efficient monitoring of consumers' electrical energy consumption
- Control to the individual consumer's Electrical Energy supply will enable us to target the corrupt consumer
- Smart meter designed is cheaper and accurate.
- Proper allocation of resources
- New technology will be introduced in the old electrical distribution system
- The proposed system is based on Node MCU which is a Wi-fi enabled microcontroller board along with current (C.T) and voltage (ZMPT101b) sensors, display and a supervising P.C.
- Proposed system contains 4 smart meters which are designed to be same. Here process of 1 unit is defined; microcontroller board gets the raw data from sensors through its ADC and processes that for metering purpose along with displaying it for the end user, finally the unit will be connected to a central hub and there will be exchange of data. The centralized hub is the feature which makes our system centralized as it controls the power supply to the consumer where the meter is connected.
- The consumer supply will be controlled through the designed latch relays which are designed specifically to be compatible with the meters.
- The central hub will use a third party software that will allow access to it which allows it to access the data and control the meter at the consumers end.
- The system allows to tackle the theft and the management issues in the distribution system.
-
The theft is detected if the reading of main meter exceeds to a certain specified value from the sum of readings of other sub meters connected to it and an alarm or lamp starts to operate.
