CabSafe: In-Cabin Monitoring of Vehicles using mm-Wave Radar

Project Summary

CabeSafe is a milli- wave radar based in-cabin monitoring system that is used to detect driver drowsiness and child presence detection when they are accidently locked in vehicals to save them from cehicular heatstoke and suffocation.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to monitor the attention of driver while driving by observing drowsiness of the driver and to insure children (accidently locked in the vehical) safety so that the number of casualities due to such incidents may decrease. Also monitor health condition and attention of driver.

Project Implementation Method

We are using Acconeer four XR112 radars with XC112 connection board for in-cabin monitoring system. Each radar will be mounted above on the passenger seat to detect passenger and child detection.  To differentiate between a child and an adult doppler signature will be used and a comprehensive deep learning model will be trained for this purpose.

Autonomous nervous system activity, which can be measured noninvasively from the heart rate variability (HRV) signal obtained from surface electrocardiogram, presents alterations during stress, extreme fatigue and drowsiness episodes. Therefore, heart rate variability (HRV) signal will be measured and thus will be used to detect driver's drowsiness.

The .h5 data acquitted from XC112 board will be processed in real time. Classification and detection will go on side by side. This data will be used to check heartrate variability and breadth rate of the occupants. On this basis our ML model will classify that how much passengers are sitting in the vehicular cabin. Moreover, if the driver gets drowsy based on heartrate variability and change in breadth rate, we will detect the drowsiness. If a child gets locked in car this system will detect child presence in the locked cabin by sensing child’s vital signs and will notify parents or the owner of the car.

Benefits of the Project

In-Cabin Monitoring System consists of two sub-systems:

  • Driver Monitoring System
  • Occupant Monitoring System

Driver Monitoring System

A driving monitoring system will be a key feature for OEMs to meet Euro NCAP 2025 by 2022. Target is to substantially reduce driver errors caused by d drowsiness, or other abnormal vital conditions. More than 1.25 million people are killed annually in road accidents; 95% of the cases are caused by humans.

A driving monitoring system will prevent driver from distraction, and it will also detect driver’s drowsiness.

Occupant Monitoring System:

Occupancy monitoring systems is relatively new concept compared to driver monitoring systems. The information collected during this system can be used for turning on seat heating, seat belt alarm detection, smart airbag deployment, left behind life warnings, and automated air conditioning systems.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverables of the project are hardware which will be implanted inside the car cabin to monitor the dorwisiness od driver as well as it will also peroform child presence detection when the car cabin is locked. Hardware will contain 4x XR 112 Radars, 1x XC 112 board, 1x Raspberry pi 3.

Alongwith hardware we will also have software. It will be a mobile app which will be used to display number of occupants sitting inside the car cabin and other outputs.
