Project Title

Bluetooth Based Smart Home System using FPGA

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Our project is based on smart home system using bluetooth technology and FPGA (field programmable gate array) microcontroller.Advancements in technology has made effective the application of installed systems within the domestic home equipment. The smart home system has added new competence and appearance. With the increasing development of modern technology, the demand for smart homes has increased where appliances can be constrained by users through digital techniques, or through common device. Smart Home System has two types which are Wired and Wireless communication system. We are using wireless technology because it has proven more reliable and also in demand to improve the standard of living. This proposal presents a cost- effective solution where a user can control devices and appliances by using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) controller which is interfaced with Bluetooth.

Project Objectives

Todaylife is very busy and everyone wants easiness. Smart Home System gives high range of safety in lots of appliances. It reduces the human efforts, save time and money. One of the major advantages of smart home is that it is cost efficient and energy efficient. The essential objective of smart home is to assist handicapped and old aged people that will allow them to manage domestic appliances and alert them in some immediately situations.

Project Implementation Method

Smart Home System provides security every time, we are outdoor from our home, we can                              manipulate our appliances through automation. It also increases the electricity effectivity as it will turn off the device when no longer in use. It is user friendly and provide us more viability in our ever day life. For Smart Home System machine there are several strategies and we are preferring FPGA one, as it is more reliable.

FPGA solve many complex problems and we are selecting FPGA as a substitute of a Microcontroller as it can function many devices at a time. FPGA board controls the domestic appliances which are connected via relays.

FPGA board are of many types, right here we are using ALTERA DE2-115.

The Bluetooth module is used. The communication between the Bluetooth module and the cell smartphone is wireless and then that module is serially connected to the FPGA board through RS-232 for the manipulate of home appliances.

Next, we will learn Verilog language and we will implement our Verilog program on MODELSIM software. Verilog is used for verification, for test analysis and timing for logic synthesis.

A MODELSIM supports Verilog/VHDL programming language. All the implementation of software is done on it. ModelSim is a Multi-language HDL software that incorporates an implicit C debugger. It tends to be utilized autonomously or related to IQP or in, Xilins ISE or Xilinx Vivado. Simulation can be worked by a GUI or automatically utilizing contents.

The design is then implemented to hardware after finishing of simulation for this we will use synthesis tool called QUARTUS.

QUARTUS is used. The Altera Quartus II is a platform for multiple designs that adapts to your specific needs in all phases of FPGA easily. This software was introduced by Intel and has programable logic. Quartus II software provides highest synthesis and routing, resulting in time advantages for compilation.

Altera Quartus II includes a hardware description, implementation of VHDL and VERILOG, visual modification of logic circuits, and simulation of vector waveform.

Interfacing and burning is completed by utilizing the ports of FPGA like RS#232 etc.

At the end of Hardware and simulation process we will make Thesis on our project.”

Benefits of the Project

The question is that, why we need Smart Home System?

Todaylife is very busy and everyone wants easiness. Smart Home System gives high range of safety in lots of appliances. It reduces the human efforts, save time and money. One of the major advantages of smart home is that it is cost efficient and energy efficient. The essential objective of smart home is to assist handicapped and old aged people that will allow them to manage domestic appliances and alert them in some immediately situations.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Technology development has made viable the implementation of embedded systems inside domestic appliances. These technologies present new and current opportunities to enlarge the connectivity of devices inside the homes for the cause of smart home system. There is an increasing demand for smart home system where appliances react automatically to change surroundings conditions and can be easily controlled via a common device which is used in our project is field programmable gate array (FPGA). There are many devices that can be used for Smart Home system, FPGA is one of the best among them because its multi-tasking and parallel processing. FPGA controller interface a mobile device through Bluetooth. We are using Bluetooth wireless technology that allows communication between user and devices in a short range. Through smart home system we can perform different tasks like security, energy saving, control smoking alarms, doors, fans, lights and temperature monitoring.
