Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to automate the irrigation system using soil moisture sensors controlled by Arduino. Automated irrigation system will ensure efficient use of water (water conservation) and will play a vital role in enhancing the agricultural growth. Green houses can be of great benefit as they provide ideal conditions for farming. The humidity and temperature inside the green house will be controlled through their respective sensors and a ventilation fan. The main purpose of this project is to propose and implement a system which will make life easy for a labourer with well organized, structured and auto-controlled.

Project Implementation Method

First and foremost, the wooden base structure will be built with parameter walls. The wooden bed will be filled with appropriate soil and mud. Flowers will be used as a demonstration of the agricultural crop. Rigid pvc pipes will form a tunnel structure with sprinkler heads infused in the top section. The formed structure will be covered with transparent sheet, representing a green house. The moisture sensor will control the amount of water required or not required and it will send this information through Arduino to the water tank. Water stored in the tank will be supplied using a water pump. The temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse will be controlled by their respective sensors and a ventilation fan. A 12 volts DC battery will power the electrical equipment. Solar panels will be used to recharge the DC battery.

Benefits of the Project

This irrigation system will save water and could potentially play a major role in avoiding water crisis. This project will ensure no wastage of water. This irrigation system will enhance agricultural yields with efficient use of water. This irrigation system allows cultivation in places with water scarcity, thereby, improving sustainability. This irrigation system can be adjusted to a variety of specific crop needs and requires minimum maintenance.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The automated irrigation system comprises of two units – a control unit and a sensing unit. The control unit consists of Arduino, which controls the execution of operation and the sensing unit consists of different sensors such as soil moisture sensor, humidity sensor, and temperature sensor.
