According to the statistics of Association of Pakistan Motorcycle Assemblers
(APMA), presently 72 registered companies were involved in the manufacture,
import and assembling of the two-wheelers in major cities of the country [1]. In
1976, the Dawood family initiated a Motorcycle Assembly and Manufacturing
Company through a joint venture with the world-renowned Japanese company,
Yamaha. The motorcycles swiftly became best sellers and Dawood-Yamaha
soon became a household name. The company register as Dawood Engineering
Pvt. Ltd [2]. The head quality assurance department and his team were facing a
problem of wheel alignment as some complain raised by the motor cycle
buyers.
The current wheel measurement system is manual and the workers are using
screw gauges and vernier calipers for different diameters measurements but this
process reported errors in few cases. Especially centroid issue for different
circular wheel parts cannot solve with this manual method. The head quality
assurance from Dawood Engg., visited UIT and discussed this issue with Prof.
Dr. Shoaib Zaidi and he assigned this task to Dr. Muhammad Wasim (Assistant
Professor) to resolve this issue of alignment, centroid and measurements of
diameters using Image Processing Techniques. Once this automated system
develops, it can be deployed in a number of motorcycle manufacturing
companies as well, as this automated system will resolve the issues of wheel
measurements in a more convenient way with more accuracy as well. This may
be the urgent need of all motorcycle-manufacturing companies.
The aim of the project is to develop an automated system for measuring the
mechanical part of motorcycle wheel using Image Processing. The existing
system is manual and need to be automated. The key motivation of this project
is that this proposed project is initiated by industry and can solve the issue of
wheel measurements and we are very excited to work in this domain.
The provided wheel is a mechanical part of motor vehicle. There are around
2000 piece per day produced by Dowood Motors, and are measurement of
wheel related parameters are manual. It is
mutually decided to convert some of measuring parameters automatically using
image processing techniques. In this regards 12 samples are drawn at initial
level to set he measuring parameters in automatic setup.
An automated wheel measuring system will be provided to Dawood Engineering. This system will be efficient in term of processing time and accuracy as compare to current manual system. The system will measure the diameters of the mechanical part of motor vehicle and check the centroid of all diameters as discussed with engineers in meeting at Dawood.
Following steps will follow to conduct measurement of wheel parameters:
Step1: Wheel place at the right position under the camera to capture image
Step 2: This image the use for measurements of wheel parameters using image
processing techniques
Step 3: Compare the process parameters with the actual values of wheel
parameter. In case of correct measurement green light automatically on
and then new wheel can place for measurement
Step 4: All measurement information along with time of observation,
technician name and results of measurement then store in database
Step 5: Around 2000 wheel per day are processing and this system will help tp
measure parameter in short span of time with better accuracy
An automated hardware and software based setup for wheel measuring
parameters, which consists of red and green LEDs, in case of correct
measurements green light automatically ON otherwise red light will be ON,
which shows some error in wheel alignment or in diameters. Data along with
complete profile will store in cloud database for detail analysis. This system
will minimize the process time as compare to manual system with high accuracy.
