Augmented Reality Based Learning Application for Children
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryTaking Kindergarten children to visit a park, zoo or attraction is, of course, the perfect way to teach them about the world. But how can you extend that learning after the field trip is over and the memories begin to fade? The proposed system allows children to step back inside that experience and re-live the excitement. It also offers great potential to extend their understanding.
The proposed project introduces a new way to integrate Augmented Reality into educational activities for children. This free interactive mobile AR application is developed to facilitate the learning of fruits. The application could help the KG children to learn about the different fruits independent of teacher’s assistance. With the use of AR display technology, the KG children will develop the ability to learn about fruits through the application as compared to the use of traditional paper-based methods. The use of AR technology could enhance learning motivation in the KG children.
Project ObjectivesThe proposed application is targeted towards school teachers, young children mainly studying in Kindergarten or of age 3-6 years and their parents.
- To introduce AR as one of the learning medium in the Kindergarten
- To incorporate interactive learning style in the Kindergarten using AR
- To create an infotainment application that is tailored and customized to make it easier for the children to understand different fruits and vegetables.
Our project phases are defined broadly in three phases:
PHASE 1: Object Detection
This module is responsible for detecting the object in front of the lens of the camera and classifying it to the category that it belongs to. The object detection will be done in real time. An object detection model is programmed to detect the presence and location of multiple classes of objects. The model contains images that contain various pieces of fruit, along with a label that specifies the class of fruit they represent (e.g. an apple, a banana, or a strawberry).
PHASE 2: 3D Modelling
This module is responsible for the creation of the Models which are to be imprinted on the detected objects from the camera. The models created will be of the .obj format and will be resizable and zoom-able models giving the children or the user a detailed inspection of the fruit.
PHASE 3: Kids Learning Phase
This module is responsible for the development of an interactive screen in Unity which will allow the user to view the detected fruit with more details i.e. with the detailed description of the fruit, its 3D model which can be resized and zoomed in or out for better understanding of the fruit helping the children with the learning of the fruit. It will also be responsible for giving the user the option to pronounce the name of the fruit and spell it; a button will be used for both of these operations.
Development Tool:
- Unity3D
- SketchUp
- Photoshop
- Microsoft Visual Studio
Programming Language:
- C#
- Detailed understanding of fruits for Kindergarten children
- Real time object detection of fruits
- Tangible user interfaces and augmented reality
The final deliverable of the proposed system is a mobile application which will be responsible for doing real time detection of objects i.e. fruits and vegetables. The application will detect the object in front of the camera and will show up the details of the object and pronunciation of the name of object and will augment a 3D model of the object in the application.
