Assessment of in vitro antibacterial activity of different variants of Pakistani honey against clinical pathogens
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryHoney is sweet, natural viscous extract that is made up of honey bees as they produce sugary floral nectar. It has an antioxidant and antibacterial potential, for over 5000 years it is used to heal burns and wounds as it also fights against clinical infections. The aim of this study is to determine the in vitro antimicrobial potential of various types of Pakistani honey that will be tested against various clinical pathogens. All variants of honey will be diluted in sterile distilled water to make dilutions of different concentrations. The antimicrobial activity of honey will be evaluated using agar well diffusion assay. Moreover, different types of honey samples will be assess on the basis of their Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) by agar dilution method. The result will be calculated on the basis of quantitative and qualitative significances through statistical analysis. Each variant of honey will have a specific effect on various clinical isolates. It is scientifically proven that honey is used as an ancient and tradition medicine all over the world due to its high osmolarity, acidity and low pH. The honey variant which will give efficient antibacterial activity may be useful for the treatment of clinical infections caused by multidrug resistant pathogens.
Project ObjectivesTo determine the antibacterial activity of different variants of honey against clinical isolates.
To examine the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of honey extracts.
Project Implementation MethodIn the current project, the first step would be literature review related to the antibacterial activity of honey extracts. It includes the effect of honey extracts on clinical pathogens. After initial extraction of honey, MIC and MBC will be determine to check the efficiency of different honey variants.
Benefits of the Project| The emergence of multidrug-resistant clinical pathogens is one of the most challenging public health issues due to the regular misuse of antibiotics. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are causing a great damage to public health. Therefore, current study is designed to examine the efficacy of natural honey extracts as an alternative way to treat various infections caused by multi drug resistant pathogens. Honey has very good inhibitory potential against various pathogens. Therefore, it is a clear need to investigate possible use of honey for therapies of bacterial infections by characterizing the active components of honey extracts. |
