Project Summary

In this project, we will deliberate how to control home appliances and safety system using GSM technology by using android application through android mobile phone. The advantage of using GSM technology is that we can control the home appliances from remote places anywhere in the world. This system allows the owner to control the appliances and to receive a feedback status of the home appliances by sending instructions in form of SMS as well as through an android application. The system also has automatic water tank in which the water level is monitored and the tank is automatically filled when empty. For the safety system in case of gas leakage it will report the owner by sending a SMS and also by ringing an alarm. Thus by using GSM technology, it provides the wireless access to the devices to be controlled.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to using arduino board with GSM being the remotely controlled by an android mobile phone. As technology is advancing and houses are getting smarter. Modern houses are gradually shifting from conventional switches to centralized control system, involving remoute control switches. Presently, conventional wall switches located in different parts of the house makes it difficult for the users to go near them to operate. Even more it becomes more difficult for the elderly or physically handicapped people to do so. remoute control home automation system provides as most modern solution with smart phones.

Project Implementation Method

This project works as complete on its own in remotely and automatically switching on or off of an electrical appliance not limited to household appliances and sent a feed bach message indicating the new present state of appliances.

Benefits of the Project

The project on GSM based home automation and safety system which is very useful and also very economical. It is economical because it provides low power utilization and if the appliances which are not needed can be switched off thus providing power efficiency .It provides simple and easy way to control the household appliances with a single SMS or by using an android application. The main advantage here is that even though the controlling can be done by the android application which has safety features but in absence of an android mobile phone one can control it by sending a normal SMS to the GSM modem. Also the safety system can be easily installed in the house and used. It informs the owner in case of gas leakage and theft even when the owner is not in the house.

This project can be installed at home, office and appartements.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The working of the project is divided into two parts which are home automation, home safety system. For the home automation we have designed an android application through which we can control the home appliances. This application is used to send a SMS to the GSM modem used in our project. This will read the SMS and send it to the microcontroller. The microcontroller will extract the message from the received SMS and control the relay module. The relay will turn on or off the appliances as ordered by the owner. The advantage of the project is even if the owner does not have an android phone the can send a SMS to the GSM modem to control the appliances. Similarly, for home safety system we are using a LPG gas detector which will detect gas and send a feedback to the microcontroller .The microcontroller will check whether the values send by the sensors are above a certain value. Then it will send a feedback SMS to the owner through the GSM modem and also ring an alarm.

We will also use automatic water tank. To achieve this we will use ultrasonic sensor to measure the water level in the tank. If the water level fall a certain value then the buzzer will be turned on a notification will also be sent and the relay with which the motor is connected will be turned on. Also when the tank is full the relay will be turned off. The LCD display will show the show the status of the appliances.
