Augmented reality (AR) superimposes virtual objects over the physical world to enhance its user perception. AR is widely used in education, medical, training, security, entertainment, and many other fields. Home decoration is an interesting yet difficult task that involves different decisions about the choice of different objects and their placement in the room/home.

 In this project, we will develop an AR application called ARDecore. ARDecore will help people to better organize their room by organizing different objects in the room virtually. People will select virtual objects for the product (such as bed, tables or decoration pieces, etc.)  according to his/her choice and see it virtually in different positions in the room/home to decide whether it looks good or not.  ARDecore will allow user for object manipulation and its geometric information visualization.

Various technologies are used in AR rendering, including optical projection systems, monitors, handheld devices, and display systems, which are worn on the human body. We will use a video recording camera and a display screen for better visualization results. In addition, we will also provide an android version of the ARDecore which can be used by mobile phones as well.

Project Objectives
  1. An interactive tool allowing the user to place virtual objects (such as bed, table, and decoration pieces) in the physical room which will help people to decide about room decoration and organization in an efficient and effective way.
  2. To provide an accurate pose estimation (including the size of the objects and their pose) of the 3D objects and an easy interaction with these objects.
  3. To design a portable application to be used on windows as well as smartphones. 
Project Implementation Method

 The tools we will use are Unity 3D, AR Foundation, AR Core, and ARToolKit. In addition, 3D Models, Android Studio, and geometric libraries such as CGAL will be used in this project. AR Foundation allows working with augmented reality platforms in a multi-platform way within Unity.This package presents an interface for Unity developers to use. OpenGL graphics library will be used for graphics object visualization and handling their geometric information.

Benefits of the Project
  1. ARDecore will help people to better decorate their homes/rooms in an efficient and effective way.
  2. It will help people to decide about different decoration pieces and furniture styles for their homes by viewing their suitability using a virtual overlay on their respective places.
  3. It will also allow people to shop online. People can download images from the online shops and generates their 3D overlay which can be placed anywhere in his/her home via a video recording camera. The 3D virtual images will be augmented to the real environment in real-time.  
  4. The geometric properties of the products (bed, chair, table, etc) can be visualized by ARDecore, which will help in shopping decisions.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

ARDecore is an Augmented Reality application planed in this proposal that helps people to decorate their home/room in an efficient and effective way. It will be available as open-source and portable software for the community and will be executable on smartphones and personal computers. It will take 2D images of the different objects such as chairs, beds, tables, and decoration pieces; then it will create its 3D virtual objects. These virtual objects can be placed over the real-world environment via user interactions.  Users can translate, locate, rotate, zoom, and change the color of these virtual objects. In addition, users can see geometric information about these products. Furthermore, users can change the color of the walls and other parts of the home.
