The wheelchair is one of the most commonly used assistive devices to promote mobility and enhance the quality of life for people who have difficulties in walking (e.g. a person with spinal cord injuries resulting in quadriplegia or paraplegia, muscular dystrophies). Wheelchair mobility opens up opportunities for wheelchair users to study, work, engage in social activities, and access services such as healthcare. In addition to providing mobility, an appropriate wheelchair benefits the physical health and quality of life of the users by helping in reducing common problems such as pressure sores, the progression of deformities and improve respiration and digestion. Motorized wheelchairs are traditionally controlled by a joystick or sensors attached to the user's body, but now innovation in artificial intelligence is helping severely disabled people drive their chairs with their eye movement expressions. The eye tracker in the wheelchair inform eye moments to the AI and the AI program defines where the wheelchair should move to and guide it to avoid obstacles

Project Objectives

Disabled individuals face numerous difficulties throughout everyday life, being reliant on a third individual to move to any location. The AI-Based electric wheelchair is intelligent which makes a minimal effort for the fully dependent patient. To give them a supporting guide, numerous researchers have been working for quite a while. The creation of AI-Based Chairs an extraordinary aid to them however it actually limits their movement. This project targets furnishing them with a non-polluted and practical arrangement as an Electric AI-Based Wheel Chair. People can easily move with the movement of Iris. An AI-Based Camera detects the movement of the eye and makes decisions on the basis of CNN. The system input is images of the user’s eye that are processed to estimate the gaze direction and the wheelchair was moved accordingly. CNN exhibited the best performance and thus it was the model of choice for the gaze estimator, which commands the wheelchair motion. This work not only empowers any immobile wheelchair user but also provides low-cost tools for the organization assisting wheelchair users.

Project Implementation Method

The hardware architecture consists of an embedded system that is based on Arduino Uno board, a mini-computer, Motor Driver and an IR Camera embedded on wheel chair. The camera takes images at the rate of 30fps and after processing these images make decision (Left, Right, Forward, None). Once the Module receives the message, the command sent will be extracted and executed by the microcontroller attached to it and depending on the commands fed to the Motor Driver, the motors will function accordingly. The system will interpret the commands and control the Wheelchair accordingly via live view. Meanwhile, the ultrasonic sensor works while the circuit is on and makes sure the path has no obstacle and if any obstacle occurs it notifies the Arduino and stops wheelchair till further command is obtained from the user.
