Project Summary

The increasing population of the world calls for the need to secure food with the same ratio from the Agriculture sector to cover for the massive population of the Earth. In order to contribute to this cause, more productivity is expected of our farmers and agriculture experts and these are covered by our Android powered software solution "AgriFarm".

Pakistan is one of the Asian countries, having the largest sector of Agriculture. It needs to make farming more productive in order to increase yield and make typical farming methods more productive and efficient. This increased yield will influence and boost the contribution to exports of Pakistan. In order to increase yield, we have to make our farmers more productive and provide them literacy through our innovative software solution to save their crops, discover innovative ways of farming by staying connected to the agriculture community.

Project Objectives

To help bring together farmers, agriculture experts and all those interested in agriculture to discuss, share farming ideas and experiences related to best practices of farming and to make farmers more self-aware and productive to better manage their farm. Our software will help farmers expand their farmer's network by recommending them to users of their interests and connecting them to experts.

Our software solution will help diagnose and identify crop disease, predict the market prices of vegetables and fruits and will also show history of prices fluctuation to help farmers take well-informed decisions such as making a decision on what is a good time to sell in the market, the prices will also help public stay alert of the market price's inflation and buy on timely and on reasonable prices.

Finally, our software solution will provide farmers with recommendations of videos and news to keep them updated and well informed about the latest trends.

Project Implementation Method

A smart software solution powered by Android that offers the following features:

  1. Plant Disease Detection
    • As depicted in the following attached figure, the user can take a picture using his camera or pick a saved image.
    • The image is uploaded to Firebase Storage and a reference is stored in Firebase Firestore.
    • The upload completion process triggers Firebase Functions that call the Machine Learning model to process the image and make a probabilistic prediction and show a predicted list of likely diseases that the leaf is infected with sorted from high probability to low probability.
  2. Market prices of fruits and vegetables
    • Prices are provided by the government database and shown to the user, based on user's interests. This interest list can be changed in preferences.
    • Users can also see all the prices as well if he wishes.
  3. Relevant videos recommendation
    • Videos are fetched from Youtube via Youtube Data API and played through Youtube Player API.
    • User will receive recommendations based on our collaborative-filtering recommender system.
  4. News recommendation
    • News is fetched from Firebase Firestore database and sorted from the latest to outdated and containing the topics that are of interest to the user. Using content-filtering, these topics are captured from users who interact with our software solution in order to improve our recommender system's future recommendations.
  5. Updated weather based on selected location
    • The user's location is accessed and updated weather is shown to user based on his current location. User can also change his location manually to fetch weather of other locations.
  6. User recommendation
    • Users are recommended to other users based on a hybrid collaborative-filtering algorithm.

2. Our software solution will bring the latest and relevant information to farmers in a way that they can understand and consume easily.

3. Disease diagnosis: Our software solution helps farmers diagnose the disease of their crops to identify the disease upto a certain accuracy.

4. Connectivity: The larger the network the better information sharing and better performance. Farmers will be able to connect with each other and share ideas and experiences

5. Remotely accessing market prices: Farmers won't be visiting the market often rather they can have access to the prices information remotely which will help him save time and energy and make well-informed decisions based on the market prices.

6. Learning: Farmers will learn new and innovative farming and crop-protection methods from the world with our software solution through videos.

7. Our software solution gathers agricultural related news from various sources and delivers at one place to farmers, so they remain focused yet well informed with the trends.
