Adaptive cruise control through traffic sign recognition
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryThis project is to develop a system which would be able to detect the traffic sign board on runtime and it will then adjust or maintain the speed of the prototype in accordance to the defined speed limit by the detected speed sign board. Though fully autonomus systems exxist the goal for this project is to make this system cost effective and make the conventiontional cruise control more adaptive.
Project Objectivesthe objectives of this project are as follows:
- to develop a robust system which would effectively localize and recognise the speed sign board
- the system will also detect hurdles or obstacles in its path and will avoid coolision
- to keep the system cost effective
- make conventional cruise control more adaptive
the project is broken into 2 broad parts one dealing with the speed sign board recognition and the second depending on the input from the previous to set, adjust or maintain the speed of the prototype. The first part of this project is then further broken into 2 parts one localizing and extracting the speed sign board from the raw unstructured scene. Then the second part is to classify or recognise the speed sign board the first part is tackled by the use of an MSER based detection algorithm using stroke width variation and geometric properties of text to idetiify and then extract the region of interest for the part of recognition an neural netwrord trained by GTSB (german traffic sign board dataset ) by keras and tenserflow 2.0 is used. The recognised will become the final input target for the PID controller developed in the raspberry pi which will control the speed by altering the PWM.
Benefits of the Projectthe benifit of such a project are listed below:
- this will reduce the risk of accidents as it will detect objects in its path to avoid coolision and then will adjust the speed to be under the speed limit so careless driving will be reduced
- create an enhanced driving experience by assisting the driver on long drive routes especially where speed limit boards might be missed by the driver.
- make the cruise control available to be used in the city without repeatedly switching the control on and off when zones are switched
the final deliverable will be :
- detection and recognition of the speed sign board in realtime
- adhering to the detected speed sign board
- effective object detection and will avoid coolision
- cost effective system
