Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryAn ultrasonic probe holder has been developed. Ultrasound is often employed in medical fields for variety of purposes. Presence of sonographer is necessary to perform the ultrasound examination. This practice in sonographers leads to various musculoskeletal and other bones related disorders as some ultrasound scans are time consuming. To aid the sonographer and to obtain the high quality ultrasound results, a robotic ultrasound system is designed to hold and manipulate the ultrasound probe. We have designed a robotic device which is based on master slave principle. To check its effectiveness, this device has been operated. This device is also proved beneficial in the current circumstances i.e. COVID, as it can be operated from a distance to avoid risk of infection for physician or sonographer.
Project ObjectivesOur main objective was to aid sonographer and to relieve him from musculoskeletal disorders and to minimize the interaction of sonographer with patient keeping in view the covid-19 pandemic.
Project Implementation MethodFirst of all we proposed an idea to our supervisor. After successful approval we moved on to the design phase. Design phase was quite tough. A solidworks design was made after which we moved on to the hardware phase. After trial of different materials we finally concluded with aluminium. After that we added ultrasonic sensor for collision detection and FSR for force measurement and haptic feedback.
Benefits of the ProjectThis device will be very beneficial in the current hours of need of COVID 19 as well as will facilitate the sonographer.
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders among sonographers can affect the standard of patient care, can have a financial influence on both the individual worker and the ultrasound department, and can have negative impact on the confidence of the workplace.This robotic system is designed to reduce the sonographer’s labor by reducing their physical efforts of performing ultrasound. This is fast reliable and accurate solution to the needs of a sonographer. This robot is providing complete hand movements as needed by the sonographer to perform the examination.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThis is fast reliable and accurate solution to the needs of a sonographer. This robot is providing complete hand movements as needed by the sonographer to perform the examination.First DOF is providing rocking movement to our probe in X-direction. Second DOF is providing the movement in Y-direction and is used for compression. Third link DOF providing sliding movement to our probe.Fourth DOF is providing tilting movement to our probe. Forces sensitive resistor is used for force measurement and it is also providing haptic feedback to derive the vibrator motor, which provides the sensation of vibration. Ultrasonic sensor tells us how close the body is in contact with the robot.
